Hi there,

I hope my title as well as the examples shown in the picture get the idea across of what I'm looking for. Doesn't matter what the genre is, I am just looking for movies which are shot in this grim lighting.

Also, for fun, try and guess which movies the pictures come from. ::: spoiler Answer Suspiria (2018)

Black Swan

The Road :::

'Dark City' count?

'Paper Man' is pretty depressing that I remember and I think it's tone is overall cloudy except for a few bits.

Doesn’t matter what the genre is

It counts alright ^^

mihnt

Ok, in that case, 'Sucker Punch' is gloomy as fuck. Best to watch the extended cut of that for proper context.

'Watchmen', 'A Scanner Darkly', 'Above the Shadows', 'The Matrix', and the Blade Runner flicks.

All I can think of at the moment.

PP_BOY_

*Requiem for a Dream* is a must. *Children of Men*, too.

Children of Men

This was the first thing that came to mind.

Requiem for a Dream

Fuck you for reminding me that this depressing film exists.

Requiem for a Dream

Literally mentioned this film yesterday when someone asked if Jared Leto had been in anything successful.

PP_BOY_

Honestly? >!He's pretty damn good in the role, too!<

Drusas

Was it successful? It's always been kind of niche as far as I can tell. Most people have not seen it and those who have seen it appreciated it but generally only want to watch it once.

mihnt

Financially, no. Culturally, yes.

Drusas

Fair enough.

I remember the movie as being practically traumatizing the first time I watched it and then I didn't watch it again for like two decades. I watched it again last year and was surprised that it's not nearly as bad as I remembered it being. I guess movies have shifted so much in the traumatizing direction that Requiem for a Dream has been outmatched.

Or maybe I just remembered it well enough that it didn't shock so much.

VelociCatTurd

The machinist has this same vibe imo.

PP_BOY_

Oh yeah, how'd I forget this. Awesome movie, especially if you're a fan of NIN

SeaJ

I imagine 30 Days of Night has little sunshine.

Judge Dredd

Ink (2009) (an… interesting low budget film that does pull off alot visually speaking). It’s hard hard to explain but the depth/tones, both acoust and visually, of the scenes is used to convey plot elements that become clearer as time goes on.

Metalhead episode of Black Mirror. Not a movie but definitely along the lines of what you’re describing

Good movie

Funkmaster-Hex

The Road and Angela's Ashes. Actually, unless it's a comedy or a cartoon saloon production most Irish movies fall into this category. I'm thinking of the wind that shakes the barley, black 47, Michael Collins, the crying game, and kind of on in the name of the father. There are many more.

bigkahuna1986

Updoot for The Road. It's one of the best movies I'm never watching again.

BreadOven

Skinamarink is pretty much dark the whole runtime (shot in a dark house). But definitely isn't for everyone.
