Someone I know has been in a rough spot and I was asked by a friend of theirs to reach communities they cannot reach to help her help him garner some help, only to realize there are none. His mother recently died in Japan, forcing him to join college just to get away from his abusive dad, only for the death and his departure to throw the dad into a literally crippling depression forcing him to be his dad's care provider, which left him with a debt and now they hit some work issues. So far they've been living on ham and cheese sandwiches.

Since they don't technically fry... Or do they? They're basically mini electric ovens. What's the difference between an air fryer and an electric oven, other than size and energy consumption?

I have had a couple of occurences now where I post something then immediately delete it for one reason or another, yet the post keeps gaining votes and attention. When I check the post on lemmy.ca it returns a 404 but I can still view the post on the instance that it was posted to. Is this because I'm using the Photon front end or is this just a Lemmy thing? This seems like a rather large oversight...

Apologies for any issues...I can delete upon request. Lemmy doesn't necessarily have a ton of communities with a lot of users so I chose this one.

Neither seems to be inspired by the other, but share a lot of imagery and mechanics. Do they both owe a common precursor? Or is it the collective unconscious at work?

Hello Lemmings! For the past year or so, I've been working on a solo project, and I'm kinda close to being finished with it! It's a punk rock album, made with mostly open-source tools (the only non-FOSS stuff is a couple of plugins that didn't have good open-source alternatives)!

About a little over year ago after not being particularly active for a number of years, I challenged myself to pick up running. I went from not even being able to run 5 minutes to now regularly being able to run 8 miles...with my longest ever run being 11 miles.

Is that relish or is there something different?

Title basically. I’m about midlife crisis age (lol) and I’ve been on computers and technology since I could walk. What is with all these doctors who are barely older than me who can barely use the Internet, don’t know how to type or what an adblocker is? I don’t feel like I can trust a doctor who is ok with malware coming in because they doesn’t run a free adblock or even DNS block. I mean wth?

Isn't it normal for people to occasionally have suicidal thoughts and/or thoughts of self harm? I mean, think of it this way ...every human being gets sad now and then, right? So it seems like this would be a normal effect from it. We pathologize things like this, but I'm wondering if it's just common to the human experience. I know it sounds like an incredibly stupid question, but that's why I'm posting it here. Before you get concerned, no I am not going to harm myself. I have a lot of really good days too and have recently seen a psychiatrist to ask some questions. I'm in a very good mood right now. So all is good here. Just had this one question. Unless I'm just going crazy, whenever I drink tea outside it has a slight aftertaste that I never get when I drink it elsewhere. Edit to add, it has more taste, if that makes sense. It has a more complex taste.

A friend of mine got herself a new Xperia 10 and wants to encrypt the SD card. It seems this option is no longer available - previously there was a "Encrypt SD card" option in settings - but no more. Apparently it was also possible to use the SD card as "Adoptable storage" - but no more.

I do steady, part time work as a blacksmith, because I love it.

As in, what's the evolutionary reason for this? I can get seeing dogs as cute because they probably helped early humans by being "guards" essentially and they're just great companions in general, but what purpose does a cat have for example? All they want is food, and you get nothing in return except a cute cat to look at. Hell, even bear cubs are adorable and they'll eventually turn into something that can kill you with one swipe.

Crossposts might be annoying, because * essentially they are the "repost" feature of lemmy. And repeats might be low quality spam, because you have to look at the source, how often it was reposted already, etc. * crossposts might seem like a cry for unwarranted attention, but they might be necessary in a fractured federated system like Lemmy …

My entire life, I have always been told that I am "overemotional", "overreacting", etc. to any given situation. Whenever anything bad is happening to me or someone else, I am not supposed to respond or react because it makes me "overdramatic". I don't understand how people just stand by and let assholes be assholes either to themselves or to others. I am never ok with that and I get frustrated at injustices. But it has gotten me into trouble my entire life.

Okay this feels like such a basic and dumb question but I cannot figure it out. I followed a link to a Mastodon post and saw a reply I wanted to make my own reply to. No problem, I figured I have a CherryPick account which federates with Mastodon so this should be a breeze. The problem is that post IDs are obviously different across instances so I can't simply modify the URL to find the post and it hasn't synced with my instance so I can't use search to find it either. Obviously I can't login to the Mastodon instance with my account either, sadly, as much as I would love that. So I manually looked up the user and found them on my instance, but despite showing more recent posts I can't find the one I want to reply to! The post they replied to is available on my instance, their account is available, why the heck is this one reply just not available! What do I do here, just give up?

I have been trying out various therapy services lately (they all suck and do nothing, but that's another topic). One of the things that the therapists always ask/say is if I do "self care" or tell me to do more "self care". They talk about all kinds of different things that range from eating right to eating something as a treat to exercising to going for a walk to finding a hobby to etc.

In 2022, a Texas family filed a lawsuit against Apple for damaging their son's hearing after an Amber Alert went off while he was wearing Airpods. According to Google, the maximum volume of phone headphones is around 105 decibels. The family are claiming that the son now requires hearing aids after his eardrum ruptured.

Sometimes I feel like if I do so I'm basically serving as an ad, and I don't really care for that, especially if later I find that the business was scummy in some ways (which is often the case, especially later as it changes leadership/ownership).

I have a relative who I don't want to cut off, but it's obvious they need me more than I need them and it's exhausting. They want me to drop everything and spend time with them at a moment's notice, usually eating out which is super expensive, and they constantly have mental health crises and text me that they "need" me.
