It's too bad Marcan42 deleted his Mastodon page, I wish it was at least left as read-only. It had lots of insightful hardware and software posts. I'm really feeling a void for that content and would love to read similar posts from devs. Posts that are not too long, like ones on Mastodon or Bluesky, rather than long articles (which there are an abundance of).

I've been suggested to use a tiling window manager like Sway since it allows for controlling windows with hotkeys, but I'm having trouble getting started. I installed it in Fedora and tried logging back in with SwayFX (since it has features like blurring) but after I'm just shown a wallpaper with a top bar, the top left shows a 1 and the top right shows the time. I don't know what to do there. I tried looking up guides but didn't find anything, can you link me some if you know of any?

TLDR: I want to be able to set specific window sizes and positions of the current window with hotkeys, as well as focus on specific apps with hotkeys, but I'm overwhelmed.

What makes Linux appealing to me is the extent of customizability, but I didn't find many answers when looking up with desktop environment is them most customizable. Some say KDE is most customizable than say, Gnome, but doesn't Gnome support CSS customization while KDE doesn't?

Obviously we all want to avoid enshittified (aggressively monetized) software or at least get our money's worth. I'm looking at self-hosting software right now and one I'm looking has a pricing page but only for cloud (no other paywalled features) and is open source. I tried looking up future plans and didn't find much, so it doesn't seem like it will enshittify. (not related) I had thought about switching to Omnivore for a long time but then they merged with ElevenLabs and the rest is history.

I just installed a Debian 13 Trixie system on my laptop. I have 5 GPT partitions on 1 terabyte SSD and NO LVM!

When I use the Timeshift GUI to create a snapshot, it takes a very long time to complete. If I click Cancel, my desktop environment crashes and I get kicked to a black screen or a login prompt.

I'm wondering if that's possible with any desktop environment. Basically I want windows with translucent backgrounds with blurring like shown in this post; except that it always shows the wallpaper right behind the window, even if there are windows between it and the desktop. Normally with blurred background setups like that one, a window will blur the content of whatever windows are behind / beneath it.

Ok so I am currently running Kubuntu 20.04 but I'm being hounded to upgrade and I guess I'll do it on the 1st. But I've been hearing that there are some issues with upgrading and keeping your home partition encrypted and separate. What I want is to have my root and boot partitions on one ssd and my home on another with everything encrypted using LUKS ( I don't think I should encrypt the /boot). Has anyone done this with this version of Kubuntu? I think they changed the installer making this more difficult.

This is an opinion. Not even a shower thought, but something that I just realized I could express succinctly.

Personally I don't watch videos on software (except for skimming tutorials) since I prefer to learn about topics with written tutorials or Reddit. Software influencers have been on the rise for the past several years, everything from grifters claiming they can help you start an SWE career, to ones that make tutorials and showcases on software.

macOS has a variety of apps like Homerow, Shortcat, and KindaVim (watch the videos in those links if u can) that allow for navigation of apps using just the keyboard. Homerow allows for pressing a hotkey and then showing letters over UI elements which can be entered to move the mouse to said element, similar to the Vim easymotion plugin. KindaVim attempts to implement vim modal navigation inside GUI apps, so you can enter normal or visual mode and use j and k to move up or down. They all work using macOS' accessibility API which exposes UI elements for programmatic interaction.

I just switched from Windows 10 to Bazzite with KDE 6. I have experience with linux before, but not as a main OS. I have a Logitech Performance MX. I used SetPoint on Windows to fine-tune things.

Basically, just like the title says. I've had my 1080ti since launch. It is without question the single greatest PC component I've ever bought, but my computer usage has changed. I don't really game anymore, and if I do, it's generally on my Xbox. I run linux exclusively and generally speaking I stick with OpenSuse Tumbleweed or NixOS. While the 1080ti performs perfectly fine for me, I'm just tired of dealing with Nvidia drivers breaking things from time to time when updating. Machine specs are as follows;

I'm debating trying to get my hands on a used m1 or M2 air for the primary use case of leaving it on my couch so I can quickly look stuff up. I thought about going with a chrome book, but all the snapdragon powered ones either have sketchy support or are expensive.

So basically I stupidly tried to update while my thinkpad had low battery and it powered off halfway through the update. The system wouldn't boot because it was complaining that vm-linuz/linux was not found so I performed a chroot-rescue and got it to boot again. I must have messed something up during the process because now the device wlan0 is not showing up in iwctl device list. How can I fix or diagnose this issue? (I am using btrfs if that helps). Has anyone had a similar situation and can lend a hand?

Hey guys, newish to Linux, new to Arch and Hyprland.

I'm going to be doing a clean install of Arch Linux on an old ThinkPad tomorrow morning, and I'd like some suggestions for a window manager, desktop environment, or Wayland compositor.

My friends, y'all convinced me and I decided to ditch windows on this old PC. I had a task scheduler task that launched chrome on kiosk mode and navigated to this website on startup. Worked great, but windows made the whole thing chug and crashed constantly.

I can't find an active thinkpad centric community on here I am just going to post here. My Thinkpad T480s, 16 GB RAM, 238 GB SSD is randomly shutting off while at like 50%. When I try to open it back up it always is dead and I have to connect charger to boot it up again. Why is this happening? Is it battery issue? It complains about not being able to read temp2_input while shutting down and sometimes say PM usage count underflow. Not sure what that is supposed to mean.

I am a big history enthusiast and would greatly love to read more about history and big events in the world of linux or FOSS in general. Here's one example: on Feb 15, 1999, the windows refund day event happened, I am interested to read more about such events in detail. Is there a decent book or resource that covers all this in detail?

Hey guys, trying to use cron to backup my home server. There's a nextcloud script I run which I copy and pasted from the nextcloud aio GitHub, and this script works in my sudo crontab. However I have a script for my calibre library which runs perfectly well when run manually but as soon as cron time comes around it shows up in the syslog but the calibre library doesn't actually get rsynced... I'll add the calibre script here soon but any ideas in the meantime?

Hey all. Basic information I am running Pop_os! I have have downloaded and placed a cursor in ~/.icons folder and selected it with gnome tweaks. It seems to work on some but not all applications. It works on Steam, gedit, nautilus but not on any browser, Telegram, or Thunderbird.

This is actually a problem with all iPods it seems, but I can't get any of them to work on Linux Mint, or any distro. There are literally programs on the repos for working with iPods that show up if you search "iPod" and none of them actually with the four iPods I was recently given. The most popular one google results reccomend is GTKpod, and GTKpod has a helpful seems that seems to let you actually pick and choose which one you are connecting, even by color, because I guess that matters. On every iPod I've tried on GTKpod on Linux Mint and on Manjaro, none work. All either just silently hang with no error message or spit out a slew of different error messages. The one I'm trying to make it work with the most is the iPod Nano Gen 3 Pink because I want to give it away as a gift to someone with a Linux Mint computer. But nothing seems to work with them. Does anyone know what's up with that?

I know I said in my last post I'm a noob, and, i still am, I'm just a noob who can follow a YouTube tutorial. I installed Arch, not only for its minimalistic install, but also because I love the AUR. Everything I could ever want to install is there, and anyone who wants to upload their files can. This gives a windows-like install experience, which, pardon my... spanish, is actually pretty good. Any program is free to be uploaded and installed by anyone.

Such a cool piece of software. Use this community for anything related to linux for now, if it gets too huge maybe there will be some sort of meme/gaming/shitpost spinoff. Currently though... go nuts
