In my subjective opinion, NovelWriter is one of the finest FOSS writing programs out there. It has enough features for organizing, notes, etc, to be more usable than a text editor, but without the (IMO) unneeded complexity of bigger programs such as Scrivener. It really gets out of your way and lets you get to writing.

Well I just replaced my aging LG G6 with a new Google Pixel 8a running GrapheneOS. The G6 was based on Android 9 which was initially released in August 2018, and my last update was January 2019. The big issue, after 6 years since OS initial release, apps are starting to not support Android 9. Add to that, my USB-C plug was getting questionable in terms of retaining charging cables and my fingerprint reader has not worked for years.

Xfce 4.20 has been released with experimental Wayland support for most of the critical components, whilst a few pieces of functionality aren't working or at least not fully, it can be used by 'advanced' users, but expect bugs and some functionality missing.

Widelands is a free, open source real-time strategy game with singleplayer campaigns and a multiplayer mode. The game was inspired by Settlers II™ (© Bluebyte) but has significantly more variety and depth to it.

This report summarizes insights from the inaugural 2024 Open Source Software Funding Survey, a collaboration between GitHub, the Linux Foundation, and researchers from Harvard University. The objective of the survey was to better understand how organizations fund, contribute to, and otherwise support open s ource software.

PresentMon is a set of tools to capture and analyze the high-level performance characteristics of graphics applications on Windows. Over the last few years, there has been a surge in interest and adoption of generative artificial intelligence systems, and a corresponding interest in clarifying and delineating what open source should mean for AI and how to ensure AI serves the public interest. The DPGA Secretariat has been an active part of these conversations. Recognizing the transformative potential of AI, we have explored ways to democratise its benefits, advocating for public spending on AI that prioritises public interest and equitable access. Forgejo v9.0 is the first version to be released under a copyleft license, after a year of discussions. Among the motivations for this change is the realization that a pattern emerged over the years, exemplified by Redis, CockroachDB, Terraform and many others. They turned proprietary because people chose their own financial gain over the interest of the general public. Forgejo admins no longer have to worry about this sword of Damocles: relicensing it as a proprietary software is not allowed.

Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of WordPress and CEO of Automattic announced on Reddit that WP Engine initiated legal action against WordPress, Automattic, and Mullenweg himself. Mullenweg wrote that WordPress is countersuing.

In the second finding of the 2024 Tidelift state of the open source maintainer survey, we found that the more maintainers are paid, the more improvements they make to their projects.

I just learned about DOSP and wondering what lemmings think about it?

Greetings everyone. It is with much regret that I am writing this post. A plugin, ss-otr, was added to the third party plugins list on July 6th. On August 16th we received a report from 0xFFFC0000 that the plugin contained a key logger and shared screen shots with unwanted parties.

Last night Organic Maps was removed from the Play Store without any warnings or additional details due to "not meeting the requirements for the Family Program". Compared to Google Maps and other maps apps rated for 3+ age, there are no ads or in-app purchases in Organic Maps. We have asked for an appeal.
