I absolutely love wiki walking through random obscure fan wikis, but I hate how most are on Fandom.

In the last weeks Lemmy has seen a lot of growth, with thousands of new users. To welcome them we are holding this AMA to answer questions from the community. You can ask about the beginnings of Lemmy, how we see the future of Lemmy, our long-term goals, what makes Lemmy different from Reddit, about internet and social media in general, as well as personal questions.

I keep getting follows on mastodon lately that’s just spam. It’s women’s accounts that have suggestive photos and usually links to OnlyFans. I even got one on two different accounts overnight.

I was looking for some collection of posts earlier about Proton Mail and the whole controversy with the CEO, and I opened a post the lemmy instance that was suggested was lemmy.zip but the community and the poster were from lemmy.world so that made me ask myself a bunch of questions. Let's compile a list of communities (or magazines etc.) about old stuff. Please suggest further communities in the comments! Other feedback is also appreciated. I can also remove communities if they are not active enough.

Given the different way they apps are structured I don't even know if it's a sensible question, but is there a way to subscribe to something on a Madison server?

For anyone who wants an invitation to join mastodon.online, let me know! Like mastodon.social, it is one of the two official communities run by the Mastodon non-profit. The difference is that mastodon.online is invite-only.

Mastodon dms are just posts with limited visibility, and a mention to the person recieving it. They don't seem to be compatible with lemmy.

I'm asking myself if exist something inside the fediverse where you can list your profiles and other people can Send you a message throw your most used app/profile without needing an sccount on that service, unify conversations throw different platforms and notify you if one person you follow in A service has a new profile in B service.

I feel like everyone suggests following hashtags, but depending on the hashtag, I find the content that's being posted quite overwhelming when it comes to the amount of toots, and that it's hard to get an overview. Anyone that relates?

Ok, this might be a dumb question, but is it really technically possible in any way - even a convoluted one, like manually downloading HTML pages from Facebook? - to mass import posts from one's Facebook into Mastodon or Friendica instead of painstakingly copying them one by one? I've got a 10+ year archive to port and it's a daunting task to go through them...

It seems like this isn't an easy problem to solve without lots of money to pay for hosting.. but I had the thought recently, what if a video heavy fediverse platform was designed from the ground up with the intention that people were going to remix video content and that those remixes/tweaks could be saved and transferred across the network as modifications of a pre-existing large video file instead of needing to copy the entire video file onto to some valuable and scarce storage again just to slightllllyyy tweak it?

I follow #FediLive, #Owncast and "PeerTube" on Mastodon and have noticed a surge of new streamers on both services over the last month or so and I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this as well?

I am trying to cultivate a new community: !artp@sh.itjust.works. The name is lovingly stolen from a slogan of the 99% Invisible podcast: always read the plaque.

One of the advantages of a decentralized platform like Lemmy is the ability to create parallel communities on the same topic. "You don't like how a community is being moderated? Go to another instance and start your own community!" (with or without blackjack and hookers)

Thoughts on features to boost intent for posting more?

In Bookwyrm there are way too many duplicate authors and books, and a way to merge them is unclear.

For those not familiar, there are numerous messages containing images being repeatedly spammed to many Threadiverse users talking about a Polish girl named "Nicole". This has been ongoing for some time now.

Join us at !korea@lemmy.funami.tech which is the only Korean hosted Lemmy server around. We post things about Korea, mostly politics but really anything goes if it is related with Korea like kpop, the Language, the alphabet, society, gadgets, etc.

Bookwyrm's catalog is currently quite limited. Every user can always add a book, of course, but a lot of people will not find the button or just don't want to do this, and so they'll leave the platform disappointed.

This is the second time I have been hit with what is essentially "no you can't promote a Lemmy community here, that is against our self-promotion rules." (First was r/otomegames mods not wanting to help with a Fedi otome community or even letting me advertise outside of a Self-Promotion Sunday weekly post nobody looks at. !otomegames@ani.social for the curious. This incident is for promoting !infinitynikki@discuss.tchncs.de, and it feels especially bad because the official, non-Fedi community has official presence on freaking TikTok and posts partnered creators on Discord with Twitch streams and the like, but I can't show a little Reddit alternative for people who want to move off of it. Guess I'd have to start streaming and post exclusively to Fedi or something to get up. Pisses me off.)

I installed whole a lot of custom themes onto my instance recently, but I had to scour through the Internet for them. Is there a community dedicated to custom Lemmy themes, for both user styles (usable via Stylus) and ones we admins can install?

Just like apps and websites implement "Sign in with Apple" and Google couldn't we build some kind of federated authentication provider? Then everyone creates an account there and fedi apps can implement an easy way to authenticate users. Even non fedi apps could use it. I imagine user interaction between different fediverse platforms would be much easier too.

Most instances have a community where users can request the moderator role for inactive or unmoderated communities.

Lemmy's design is focused on quality content by ditching the Karma farmers and addicts. No more chasing upvotes—people here actually focus on real value instead of feeding the ego.

Basically the title. I'd like to not lose anything and import users, communities, posts/comments, etc to hit the ground running but on a more stable platform.

TikTok basically invented shorts. Maybe Snapchat. And everyone else’s sucks because their AI isn’t as good. It’s a toxic medium anyway. I with the Pixelfed creator would just focus on Pixelfed, I use that and it’s a total win, just needs some kinks worked out and more popularity.

I feel like it would be best to proxy YouTube, or subscribe to paid indie channels like nebula, but without a user base and without ad revenue or subscription revenue I don’t know how quality content can come to PeerTube. Maybe I’m just missing the content but when I’ve checked it’s all very low quality, just random unedited webcam vblogs mostly.

So I realized that signing up on lemmy.world may not have been the best option for me, so I'm wondering what the best way to move instances (I'd like to move to pawb.social or lemmy.blahaj.zone) for my account would be I'm most worried about leaving everything I made on this account behind forever, but I've seen online that there's no way to actually move your account to another instance, so what do you guys suggest the best procedure is?
