Like it or not, horror gaming is often built on jump scares. Deriding a good cheap scare ignores the endorphin rush that draws so many players to the genre, in the same way that the "elevated horror" trend forfeits some of the soul of schlocky slasher flicks and ghost movies. Don’t get me wrong, Silent Hill and Alan Wake deserve their flowers - but even those games would wither on the screen if Pyramid Head didn’t bust through a wall from time to time.

I just stumbled upon a website named Gaming Alexandria. Their main goal is to preserve videogames related stuff like artwork scans, posters, articles, interviews and even game dumps. My main focus is on playable game Roms, specifically on the Type-in Programs from magazines for the Family BASIC.

Last month, 461 video game workers with Microsoft’s ZeniMax Online Studios announced they were unionizing with the Campaign to Organize Digital Employees–Communications Workers of America (CODE-CWA). ZeniMax employees join over six thousand workers across the tech and video game industry in the United States and Canada who have now unionized with CODE-CWA since its creation in 2020. That now includes unions at major video game studios like Sega of America, Blizzard, and Bethesda, as well as games like World of Warcraft.

Dreams On A Pillow is a stealth adventure that tells the story of a young mother during the Nakba - the 1948 ethnic cleansing, displacement, and cultural suppression of Palestinian Arabs by Israel. As its funding campaign puts it, it’s a game about "a land full of people being made into a people without land."

The Minish Cap is one of my favorite games of all time and definitely my favorite Zelda game. Everything from the dungeon puzzling, to the story, to the music is perfection, and the synergy between Capcom and Nintendo was like no other.

We have a brand new PlayStation2 core, LRPS2. It’s a heavily modified version of PCSX2 custom made for the Libretro API, and it currently runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

It's frightfully early in the year to be bustling, but I can't get enough of the crowded streets of ancient "Chinese-style" RPG The Bustling World. The latest trailer is a series of sweeping yet intimate, colourful urban cross-sections, showing dozens of NPCs selling fish, shaking hands on balconies, shouldering barrels, dancing with fans, honing their feng shui, and various other pursuits that allegedly form part of full NPC life simulations. It's like scrutinising a Hitman level from above, except that all of these people have evolving relationships and sleeping patterns and they might hunt you down if you murder any of their relatives. Me, I just want to play Where's Wally.

The site also has pages for keeping track of what has been delisted from specific vendors, such as Steam, Epic or GOG for PC

Grim Dawn is a diablo-like ARPG, kickstarted in 2012 as the debut title from Crate Entertainment, an indie studio made up of devs from Iron Lore (who made the Titan Quest games). The devs describe it thus:

I really tried to enjoy myself. God, I tried so hard. I attempted to find nuggets of joy within its hamfisted dialogue, one-note companions and the flashy but soulless fights. But I just couldn't do it. Every time there was a glimmer of hope, it was dashed against the rocks of infinite disappointment.

What's retroachievements? Basically it adds XBOX Live style achievements and global high score tables to retro emulation platforms. This added layer of social gaming and community driven accomplishment hunting really builds on the retro games emulation experience. The best part is you can get it running on pretty much any platform you emulate games on, your phone, your deck, your weird android handheld, HTPC, even your lappy-5000.

Playing as a Ghoul (with customizable design and even skin texture) is an endgame experience, as the related quest only starts at level 50. Ghouls will have 'dozens of alternate ways' to specialize their character, according to the developers.

I recently came across a colorization that turns the original black and white/green version of Pokémon Red for the GameBoy into a proper GameBoy Color title. This sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole, but the sheer number of hacks that have been made over the course of several decades is slightly overwhelming, so I'd love to get a decent first selection by hearing which are your favorites that have improved or transformed console and handheld games in meaningful or entertaining ways.

Yeah punk. Living that 5700g life. Rocking 3700U as a daily driver, what? Yeah I have a fast graphics card, it's called a 780m you might have heard of it from *can barely play Baldurs Gate 3 but it counts as playable*. Gaming on integrated graphics is cool because it's a lower TDP option for the environment. Fight me. I'm over here playing 2017's greatest offerings at nearly 60fps 720p and I'm enjoying myself. Oh, Cult of the Lamb? Yes, hahaha, I get over 40 fps in Cult of the Lamb. The only other gamers who can @ are switch and xbox series s gangsters. Mortal Kombat 9? Ah, "the good one" of course.

There hasn't been a new game in the Marvel vs. Capcom series since Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite was released in 2017. Now, players may have a good reason to come back to that title thanks to an upcoming fan-mod, Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite & Beyond, which gives the game an almost literal fresh coat of paint. Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite & Beyond will be released on December 20 and will only be available on PC.

Sony’s PS5 redesign is a smaller console with slightly more storage and the same incredible selection of hit games. It's easy to see how it's dominated this console cycle.
