Removed the plastic and wire guard rail that was put in originally and now I’m unsure what to replace it with. Any ideas?

This all on same breaker. Left, spliced wires are hot, but do nothing and there’s no switch for them.

This dishwasher leaks out the door. It seems there should be a gasket there. Unclear why it isn’t there, but based on manuals and videos I can find, this model always has one, and it’s typical of all dishwashers.

I’m currently working on renovating the bathroom in our 1958 home. I just finished tearing out the shoddy job some flippers did a few years back, and found some issues with the floor that have got me scratching my head. I’ve learned that it was common practice back in the 50’s to have a mortar slab subfloor, and it looks like that’s what I have in our bathroom (except where the old bathtub was, where there was just 2 layers of 5/8” plywood). The tile was adhered directly to the slab with no decoupling membrane, and the only way I could get it and the thinset off was with a rotary hammer. I’m afraid that might have been too aggressive though, because now there’s a bunch of cracks in the subfloor. I’m not certain if the cracks go all the way through because the bottom/sides of the slab are hidden. But I’m also not certain the actual original mortar slab is cracked, or if the flippers put a super thick layer or two of leveling compound down, and that’s what’s cracked, because in one area where I accidentally made a deeper gouge, it looks like there’s about an inch of smooth grey mortar-like substance at the surface, but beneath that is a lighter-colored concrete-like substance with an aggregate mixed into it.

Ok so this is fun. We are finally redoing our deck on our house that was built in the 70’s.

Fixed a water supply valve leak. Decided clean the slightly clogged drain as well. Really appreciate the manufacturers that do that much more.

Hey all, I was looking to see if anyone had any storage suggestion ideas for this Dead space. I have behind my refrigerator. I’m only able to reach in. Probably about 3 ft or so, but the space is about 4 ft wide by 7 ft long. The floor of this space is also the ceiling of my basement, so I can’t see it supporting very much weight without being reinforced. Looking for ideas if you have any, thanks!

And there it stands. Still a lot of work to do, but there will be grilling this weekend!

Okay so I decided to hire a contractor for the first time in a long time. We had a structural beam put in since the original beam was rotting and we already had extra support on the other side of the wall supporting the joists over there. But nothing supporting the joists on the other side.

Help scheduled for wednesday to lift in the kamado. I left the front beam and breads out for now so we don’t have to lift it that high.

This might not be the place for this but I feel like someone here should know.

Anyway to clean/salvage this kitchen sink? I’m not sure if it’s chipped paint or something but I’ve scrubbed it pretty good and it hasn’t budged

Finally done with the jackhammering and wrapped up the day by hauling out all the rubble.

I have a friend who has a Rohn self-supporting antenna tower (like the one pictured) with a directional cellular antenna at the top. The tower is probably 40 feet high and was erected by a previous homeowner. They would like to make it useable again but the antenna needs to be turned to point at a specific cell tower.

I believe this is the vent to my plumbing but I’ve never seen a cap like this. Any ideas?

Is there any indication that this old peeling paint contains asbestos? (Sorry for the picture link but my lemmy server is not currently working with attachments). Thanks.

Finally got the sump pump installed. Hardest part was digging the hole which was 22” of mostly rock with a little clay mixed in. No more leaky basement!

This is the same tile that existed when we moved in 10 years ago. Over the years, our kids have splashed water out while playing in bathtub and some toilet accidents… it has caused some areas to start showing hairline cracks revealing the big tile is really just a bunch of small ones placed together. Is there any easy fix to cover this somehow, or will my only real option to redo the entire floor? Thanks!

Looking for input. I’ve got a 4” to 1.5” flared flex cap for the base but trying to adjust the pipe ever so slightly seems to be troublesome. Any thoughts?

Flooring is by no means beneath me, but I haven’t really done anything below a shoe molding. So question for the tile high club: What would you do in the pictured situation? These are floor sections that have always felt a bit “squishy”. Today they finally popped up into the tent formation you see here.

Hello community, I noticed that this stair step in my european 60ies house was a bit cracked so I broke it off completely. How would you fix this? Some mortar or tile glue? Does it need some kind of rebar?

We bought our house about 2.5 years ago. Originally built in 1974, it was the first house in this subdivision by at least a decade. There were a few issues we knew about, and a few that we didn't.

Technically this isn’t home improvement since it’s a summer cottage I’m fixing up for a customer. I’ve got to say though, what a fucking privilege it is to be self-employed and land jobs like this. An elderly customer with deep pockets handed me the keys to their remote cabin and basically told me to fix whatever needs fixing. No deadlines, nobody watching over my shoulder, and I’m free to come and go as I please. I wouldn’t go as far as to say I’d do it without pay, but I honestly can’t think of anything I’d rather be getting paid for.

I recently installed an Emporia Vue with monitoring for the individual circuit my water heater is on. It captured the very significant difference in energy usage from replacing resistive heat with heat pump.

I'd like to know if there is something I can do to close the gap or hide the gap in the blinds. Obviously, I can measure properly and purchase new ones but really trying to avoid that.

Just noticed this when getting a new AC installed yesterday. Not sure if it's a bird or squirrel nest, or even active. It's super high up that I don't have a ladder to reach, also I am not super cool with being that close to electrical wiring but I feel like it's a hazard that needs to be removed. Anyone else experience this and what you suggest my approach should be or what service might need to be hired?

I have this single pole 3 way dimmer switch where I attached all 4 wires in the correct spot for my living room lantern, or so I thought. My lantern successfully worked, however, all the light switches in my kitchen either stopped working or worked not as expected.

My daughter is renting the basement apartment of a 100-year-old home. It's a fairly decent little place. Except for this. Can someone please tell me why there are cast iron pipes cut open, with air registers over them? Yesterday during the storm they were all full of flowing water. I checked a couple of them and they were all the same, cracked open cast iron pipe under the floor registers. What is going on here? I have more pictures if needed.

New home owner, I assume it is for my air circulation system but unsure how to use it to the best of its abilities. Does More Humid make the house more humid, or should I turn it to that setting when the house is humid to negate it?
