With the AMD Ryzen AI Halo developer platform there is the option of ordering this Ryzen AI Max+ mini PC with either Microsoft Windows 11 or “Linux OS”. When receiving a AMD Ryzen AI Halo review sample last month, I fully expected it to just be an Ubuntu LTS install with ROCm preloaded. I was quite surprised when powering it up to find that it’s an OS called the AMD Ryzen AI Developer Platform 1 “Rex” and is based on Debian Linux.
People often mistake the word “stable” in different contexts and I wish to clear up the confusion. There are two main meanings in the world of GNU/Linux for the word above and these two meanings are vastly different: once booted the system does not crash, therefore it is stable once installed the system behaves exactly the same for the lifetime of this install, therefore it is stable In both examples above you can mix-in the word “reliable” in more than one way as well, but for me personally the word reliable means that I can rely on my computer to be ready to do my bidding when I am ready to use the system.
An effort to revive and reinvigorate the 2002 Gtk2 GUI programming toolkit is growing and gaining interest… as we predicted would happen a few months ago.
I am running Poweredge R620 servers. With Debian 10 I had no trouble, I could reliably set my network names using udev and they came up consistently even when moving from older hardware years ago. Knowing full well that upgrading to Debian 11 would break everything, I have resisted for years, but I finally gave up and started moving forward.
Around 2020, I got the aforementioned laptop. At that time, I was using Windows, and generally, my IT knowledge was quite poor. Then I had a break from using it due to issues with computer overuse, and after returning from treatment (2021), I started using other laptops. This one ended up in a closet. Around 2023 I got a my beloved ThinkPad T470.
I liked that text editor—it was different, terminal-based but not clunky. Unfortunately, it was removed, and as far as I know, trying to rebuild it from the source code is largely impossible due to some strange dependencies. Just wanted to share that :)

I have some cool projects that I use such as zellij and yazi that I use but aren’t in the debian repos, I would like to attempt to package them myself, is there any guides on how to do such? were could I get some help learning how to package things?
This is what happens when you’ve got several third party repos. I just wanted to clean up some unneeded config files before upgrading to Trixie. Looks like I moved to docker-ce from docker.io at some point in the past. And purging docker.io’s files meant purgin docker-ce’s files as well.
I think i understand adding a link to /etc/apt/sources.list so apt knows to check there for packages. What i don’t understand is how to find those links.
Of the desktop environments i’ve tried, i prefer Cinnamon overall. But i find that i’d rather use the KDE or Mate versions of some programs. I don’t need Nemo when i’d rather use Thunar, or Gnome Characters when i prefer mate-character-map or kcharselect.

I recently (a day ago) switched from Linux Mint to Debian and tried out several different DEs. I settled on Cinnamon but still have leftover packages and files from Gnome, Plasma, etc. Is there an easy way to remove everything that was installed automatically by a particular DE besides reinstalling Debian with just Cinnamon? Or do i have to go through all my programs manually?

How did the changes in the binary test files tests/files/bad-3-corrupt_lzma2.xz and tests/files/good-large_compressed.lzma, and the makefile change in m4/build-to-host.m4) manifest to the Debian maintainer? Was there a chance of noticing something odd?
I've installed it on Ubuntu and Raspberry Pi but when I went to my friend's house today to install it on his Debian 12 laptop I couldn't get it to work. It might have just been general networking problems but is Debian shipped without a package that's needed for pihole?

Previously on Debian 12 I followed a guide to install the AAC audio codec for my Air Pods yet after upgrading to Debian 13 I seem to have lost the codec as I can no longer select it in KDE sound settings leaving only A2DP/SBC and A2DP/SBC-XQ, now I’m a bit at a lost as I remember all I had to do was put a aac.so file into /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/spa-0.2/bluez5/
I've downloaded an iso for trixie but I can't see any checksums for it on the website. The 'Verifying Authenticity' page makes it sound like the download should include something but all I got was the .iso file.
So I've upgraded to trixie and it comes with apt 3. For some reason the new apt insists on opening the output of some commands in less. For example, "apt list --upgradable" or "apt search" opens the output i less. I can't find how I turn this behavior off. Any advice?
Are there any suggestions for a firewall with an easy GUI? I want to open a port for kde connect so i can use sms and fling my phone to the back of the room. Thanks in advance
Looking at Debian's release-critical bugs, you can see that Trixie is close:
Testing now has fewer critical bugs than Stable, and the number is dropping quickly.
About 200 bugs still need to be fixed to get the number down to where the previous releases were done.
In older versions of Debian I used to be able to pass sec=ntlm,vers=1.0 as options to mount.cifs (and fstab) and it would allow me to mount my shared disk from my AirPort Extreme.
Besides having the latest version available, what do Debian users who run MariaDB wish to see in future versions of MariaDB, or how it is integrated and packaged in Debian?
I'm a retired Unix (AIX) admin and I run some Linux servers at home. But, I'm still using Windows as a desktop. This whole Windows recall thing is the final straw - I'm switching to Linux for desktop. I've done a bit of research and believe Debian is the best fit for me. So, I recently installed it on one of my small servers.
In the last day or so, Emacs GTK on Debian Trixie is locking up my system frequently. It's so bad that I can guarantee a full lock-up within a few minutes of opening Emacs. Env. is Gnome 48 on the Framework 13 and I assume it's XWayland causing the issue. FWIW, the issue doesn't seem to impact on Sway.
I have a few (~5) applications where the version in the debian stable repos is to old for me. Examples would be podman and restic. I found out that the version for testing are recent enough. Is it possible to install specific apps from testing while the default is stable?
I'm building a new rack server (Poweredge R620) and am using the option "consoleblank=600" in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX setting. During the setup I used the wrong memory stick and installed Bullseye, and screen blanking was working correctly there. Since I had already finished nearly all the configuration this week, I thought it would be easier to just do a regular dist upgrade than reloading the whole system.
I'm wanting to leave Windows, but am struggling as I can't seem to find a Linux stable distro for the SnapDragon X Elite. I have a Galaxy BooK 4 Edge and I noticed Debian shows the most promise. Help would be appreciated
I love the idea of trying Debian but every time I try to ditch Arch for it I end up just giving up after not being able to find all the packages I need in the repos.
Hello everyone! It's been about a month that I'm experimenting Debian on an external disk. For the most time, I've been using Testing. The issue is, that some packages are missing from Testing, while they exist on Stable (or on Unstable). The biggest problem with that is that some packages require dependencies that don't exist on the Testing repo and as such I can't install those apps.
Morning everybody. I’ve got a server at home running Debian and I handle everything over SSH aside from file transfers for which I use webmin. I’d be trying to get Frigate working on it using Podman but couldn’t get it to find the hardware I was passing to it and got pissed off and gave up, that was a few weeks ago and everything was fine. The Podman container had its own user and I’d set it up so I couldn’t access the containers with any other users, even with sudo. I’ve gone back to it this morning and found that when i try to sudo su in (which is what I normally do) i get “This account is currently not available”. I checked everything my friendly AI hero suggested but I couldn’t figure out why it had locked. The last reference in journalctl was me closing the session and there was no records of failed logins or fail2ban being triggered. I had the ! in the shadow file and passwd was showing me an L to say it was locked. In the end I gave up trying to figure out why it had locked because I couldn’t see evidence of anything dodgy so I just went to unlock it. I’ve tried passwd -u and I’ve remember the ! and rebooted but it still won’t unlock.
I know it’s my fault for believing what my neglected laptop told me about its battery but I went ahead an did a kernel update anyway and wound up needing to repair my system.
I recently added an external monitor to my Debian 12 laptop, setting it as the primary display while using the laptop’s monitor as secondary. However, I’m experiencing an issue where the external monitor randomly goes black, while the laptop screen continues to display normally. Moving the mouse brings the external monitor back to life. Interestingly, this happens while YouTube is running, with the audio playing uninterrupted. So far, I haven’t noticed this behavior with any other applications.

I know about the issues with Zoom, and in particular Zoom on Wayland. I use Debian 12, kernel 6.1.0-18 (Bluetooth issues on later kernels) with KDE on X11. So I primarily use the web app, which works really well on the whole.
Randomly on my laptop screen this appears and debian just freezes. Sometimes these vertical lines don't appear and system freezes anyway. Its just random. How do i identify if this is hardware or software issue? and then how to identify exact piece of hardware or software causing this problem.
