I want to get into philosophy. Recommend me some basic and understandable books. I'm looking for collection of philosophical essays and articles. But others will do too.

Apologies for the ranty nature. I read alot of books sure but my writting is trash

What are the best public domain books that you've read? My currently downloaded books include "The Time Machine", "Pride and Prejudice", "Frankenstein", "War and Peace", "On Liberty", "Metamorphosis" (all from Librivox), etc. I especially like "Crime and Punishment" and "Brothers Karamazov" and others by Dostoevsky since they delve deeper into human psychology, values, and morality. Also to add, Librivox is so fucking cool and now I have something to listen to on my daily bus/car rides.

It's been too long since I've read anything, but I do love horror books. My favorite horror book so far is Last Days by Adam Nevill. Almost put it down, it was that scary. In general, any horror books that are a must-read?

Looking for some self-contained grimdark books to read. Most of the genre seems to be the form of trilogies or even longer series, but I'm not looking to start a long project right now. Just a single story within one book, and then move on to other stuff (unless I get hooked..)

I know that this is an obscure and very niche request, but I thought if there ever was a place to try it would be here.

Fellow bookworms, I am glad to announce that I am at the last book of Cosmere (Yumi and the Nightmare Painter). And then, I will have finished it all. So this is where I need your help. Recommend me some awesome Sci-fi and Fantasy books that you believe will blow away my mind, like the impact needs to be huge, cannot believe this happened type of stuff. Preferred genre are Sci-fi and Fantasy, but if you know some awesome book from other genre, don't hold back, all suggestions are welcome.

It's mainly about the war in Mali, how it got to that point, and even some of the people that participated in it got more "page-time" than the librarians (around a 90% of the book, I'd dare say). Who are basically a single man.

Just waiting on my library hold for System Collapse. Can't get over the belligerent Asexual tension. 10/10 thus far.

Hello comrades and friends! I've gotten back into reading and I've been buying books about fascism, because of the political climate. I've picked up a few books, like

A Psalm for the Wild Built is so cute though. Like so cute that it hurts in the context of current events. And I'm like two chapters in. Is it possible to tag this like on mastodon so I can just livetweet books I feel like livetweeting books should be more of a thing.

I feel like the first half of this was Satisfactory from ADAs perspective but it did start to diverge about halfway through. Only downside to this one was length, I finished the whole thing in like 4 hours (edit: have already placed library holds for the rest of the series).

I'm finishing the Stormlight Archive series right now and I think I need something with a bit less of the murder / war / violence aspect that many fantasy books have.

Definitely a 4.5-5 stars from me. Reminds me a lot of John Dies at the End which is one of my all-time favorites. It's got a very similar sarcasm + meta mix. At the end though in the acknowledgements he comments on having been a writer for Stargate Universe and how he felt it was a good show and like DUDE. It was... fine. But a lot of what made the earlier stargates so good was the contrast between the dark sad moments and the utter hilarity of things like playing golf through the gate. SGU was just depressing through and through. Good book though, but again at least in part because there's enough levity to level out the dark shit.

The title pretty much says it! I'd like to explore that idea a little and would love to hear y'all's recommendations. This thought was originally inspired by lord of the rings, but I'm also currently on a little nostalgia trip by reading The Sea of Trolls and the soft magic system in that is pretty fun

Where main love interest is a dragon that can transform into a girl?

Mostly I am just looking for a good harem series. The harem doesn't need to be the focus or develop quickly, but not as slow as it wheel of time either.

I'm trying to find any redeemable qualities that make me feel better for the time I spent reading it. I could have put it down, but the raving reviews made me think that it would get better.

I am looking for suggestions on how to tackle a large reading list (currently at 556). A big part (maybe smaller than I think) is a collection of Ann Rule, Stephen King and Star Trek novels (currently just the Pocket TOS and movie novelizations). The way I go about things is to just read whatever I am in the mood for. Makes it hard for me to keep a consistent reading progression. I do read by publication date.

The Slow Cancellation of Online Libraries

Hello! I am currently making a reading tracking website (a la Goodreads, StoryGraph, and LibraryThing) as a personal project and have hit a bit of a wall, so I've come to the internet for ideas.

So many books have characters remark “it was well past moonrise”, or something else equally ridiculous, to show the passage of time at night. The moon cycle is a month long (~27 days), not some paltry 24 hours. If you know any authors please spread the word. Together we can stamp out this astronomical disillusionment!

Example: I’m reading Moby Dick by Herman Melville to get back into reading classic books.

Recently I decided to start writing a science fiction novel. I reserved a desk in my room for this purpose, I also picked up an old Thinkpad X200 on which I installed Lubuntu 24.04 and plugged in a gaming keyboard for night writing. I chose to install a minimum of applications in order to stay focused.

I've recently gotten into reading. I realised how much I love fiction, and a couple of tropes. So I'm here asking maybe some of you know any books that have them.

Me, I’m currently on ”F” is for Fugitive by Sue Grafton, still from my local library.

So my main language is Greek and I read english and greek books. Depending on the book/author I may have 2-5 words per page that I may not understand (or at least I want to understand them better). Thus, many times after I finish a page, I use aard2 and either search the word in the english-to-english dictionary or (rarer) in the greek wiktionary for a translation. (For context, I'm reading ~mainly fantasy, sci-fi or dystopian books of the 20th and 21th century and currently I'm on "Croocked kingdom". I haven't dared to try reading a classic book in english.)

I've recently started a job driving a shuttle van across the city for the general public. I've got a wide amount of leeway, but the audiobooks I've been listening to have been... not hitting right. I started with "The Name of the Wind" which was extremely well reviewed. I liked it a lot for the most part, and for the most part so did my passengers, but at one point it started talking about how much the main character would like to see one of the young woman characters naked and would pay for that privilege. In the context of the story it sort-of made sense, but out of context it was completely gross and I was beyond embarrassed. The next day I tried "Consider Phlebas" (again well reviewed) which was a completely different thing, but almost immediately it started in with a vivid description the mc being drowned in sewage- It did not hit right, despite the interesting developments that I would ordinarily probably enjoy for just myself.

Hello, I'm trying to find a book that I read a long time ago about a man who turned invisible because cosmic radiation hit his electric blanket while he was asleep. I've tried googling and chat GPT and neither of them turned up any results. Does this book sound familiar to anyone?
