Ah, Germans and hiding evidence of gas chambers. Name a more iconic duo, I’ll wait

Germany x gas chamber collab was not on my bingo card this year.

The crime is exposing mass murder not the mass murder itself. Shows the worth of “the law” and its purpose.

Germany doing its best life

it really really feels like cruelty is actively the whole point of many things these days, like businesses are going out of their way to ensure that the most cruel way remains the most profitable so they have an excuse.

we have ways of at least somewhat humanely killing animals, but nope, war crimes!

Anna and Hendrik are two brave animal rights activists from Berlin. As some of you may remember, they installed hidden cameras inside the gas chambers of Brand Qualitätsfleisch — a slaughterhouse that markets itself as a producer of “high-welfare” meat.

What they captured was the first footage of its kind ever recorded in Germany: pigs fighting for their lives as CO₂ flooded the chamber. Struggling to breathe. Panicking. Bloodying their heads against the walls. Screaming.

This is not an accident or an aberration. CO₂ stunning triggers an immediate, severe burning sensation in the mucous membranes of the nose, throat, and eyes. The animals experience intense pain, acute suffocation, and terror — for up to a minute before losing consciousness. This is the standard method used to kill pigs across Germany and much of the world. Hundreds of millions of animals per year, in chambers just like this one.

The slaughterhouse sued. And it won.

A German appellate court has ruled that Anna and Hendrik must pay a sum likely in the region of €100,000 to the company, although the exact amount still has to be determined in a separate proceeding. The claimed damages stem from their entry into the slaughterhouse, the secret filming, and the publication of the footage.

Comments from other communities

There are a few links to short videos in the article, but are there any torrents or similar things suitable for mirroring so all the footage can be retained by activists internationally?

Hmm, that’s a shame. Are there no anti-SLAPP laws that could be applied to this?

In Germany, apparently not yet. According to the article there is a German group campaigning for an anti-SLAPP law which has taken interest in the case.

Gotta hide the abuse.

Didn’t read because link and topic, but since it’s Germany I wonder if they’re using some blanket ban on mentioning gas chambers as the excuse to keep gas chambers hidden.

Sorry, but how the fuck did you come to the idea that there is a ban to mention gas chambers in Germany?

And since you didn’t read the article:

The article is bad in that regard, because it only talks about the decision, but not about the lawsuit itself. Wasn’t even easy to find, since most articles are just like this one. But the slaughterhouse sued for the damage of the break in to be paid (fair in my opinion) and for the stop of the distribution of the videos. As far as I could find it, because it is damaging to their image. Which… Is completely bonkers and it is really bad that they got the judge to agree with them. If you get filmed doing bad but legal things, you should not be able to sue in my opinion, but I’m not a lawmaker.

Why?

They use gas chamber as a sort of tranquilizer

Let pigs walk unknowingly into a chamber. They pass out and are then stabbed right in the heart ❤️, while passed out. No stress, no pain, nothing.

Thats how they do it at the slaughter house in Denmark (Danish crown)

You can tour it…. https://www.danishcrown.com/da-dk/kontakt/besoeg-danish-crown/

The footage is linked in the article. The animals are clearly panicking and stressed.

.. pigs fighting for their lives as CO₂ flooded the chamber. Struggling to breathe. Panicking. Bloodying their heads against the walls. Screaming.

Just because some people do things one way in Denmark that doesn’t mean everyone in Germany does it the same way.

I remember seeing a video of a pig in a gas chamber who literally ripped their fucking leg off while thrashing around. Humane? Fuck no.

thats so sad, ive not eaten meat for 6 years or so but i dont know how to handle this evil

From the article:

I believe, there’s a way to gas pigs that just makes them sleepy and then pass out. I think, it was by using nitrogen. But yeah, that’s not commonly done.

for up to a minute

I’m not too well versed in animal physiology, but for humans it’s closer to 3-4 minutes. And panicking doesn’t influence the speed or terror much.

Drowning in water and suffocating with CO2 are the worst feelings of dread in existance. Animal or human, period.

And panicking won’t speed it up, nor will doing medidation slow it down much since the body literally fights for its life and the adrenalin makes you very much awake and hyperalert during pretty much the entire process.

I think, it was by using nitrogen

You think right.

When panicking for lack of oxygen, the nervous system (mamallian and human alike) doesn’t actually look for the lack of oxygen for some reason, but for the overabundance of certain “common displacers”. Such as water and CO2. And that’s pretty much the exhaustive list.

Nitrogen doesn’t cause a panic response. Neither does CO (carbon monoxide).

You don’t feel anything if you’re suffocating in nitrogen or are poisoned by CO for a few minutes. Then you might feel a bit drowsy for some 10 seconds right before you lose consciousness.

Then you don’t feel anything again. A few more minutes, and you’re gone without even knowing.

Probably because Nitrogen is more expensive.

Most likely. And actually humane gases would be rarer and more dangerous to … well, humans working there.

CO^2 is The gas that causes panic since that’s what the body uses to regulate it’s oxygen/carbon cycle. It’s a built in alarm. Plus you can just vent it to atmosphere. And it’s cheap.

CO2 is also denser than air, which means it stays in the “pit” the animals get lowered into.

I’d think you could build some machine to (re)harvest nitrogen from the air and it would eventually be free. But maybe that doesn’t exist / super hard to do…

Or you could just run a pipe from the building’s furnace or generator exhaust to the pig-gassing room and use the CO2 your facility is already generating.

I believe, there’s a way to gas pigs that just makes them sleepy and then pass out. I think, it was by using nitrogen. But yeah, that’s not commonly done.

IIRC, it’s literally any other gas except CO2 - the human body detects suffocation not by the lack of oxygen in blood, but the presence of carbonic acid (which is acidic). Since every other gas doesn’t create carbonic acid (except maybe some gases that contain carbon?), they all silently/painlessly kill.

Nitrogen, argon, or hydrogen would all work and be fairly cheap. Hydrogen would be explosively flammable though, so you could combine two steps into one!

❤️ stabbed right in the heart ❤️

❤️ “humane” slaughter ❤️

❤️ Living Animals on Tour 🐷❤️

Your link doesn’t show any info on how “humane” these gas chambers are?!

You can tour it…. https://www.danishcrown.com/da-dk/kontakt/besoeg-danish-crown/

Now this takes real balls. Props to them. Actually ideally this would be a legal requirement for all slaughterhouses

Why the fuck don’t they use nitrogen, it’s cheaper than CO2 and won’t trigger pain and panic in the pigs. They are intentionally torturing the pigs

I’ve always thought that CO2 is the humane way to euthanize, assuming it’s done correctly? At least that’s what I found when looking for humane ways how to kill mice for our snake, when I was looking into feasability of raising our own mice.

We didn’t do it, because we found a good shop with frozen mice nearby, but CO2 with properly controlled delivery was the only humane way recommended by some kind of veterinarian authority I found. Is that wrong?

Or maybe it’s just different for pigs (due to size differences or something), but from what I remember, it should not trigger pain and panic, and cause the animal to first drift to sleep, anesthetize and then calmly die. Honest question, I’d like to get my facts strait.

This isn’t true, CO2 is what triggers the feelings of choking and suffocation, it’s why we panic when holding our breath as it builds up in the blood. Maybe you mean carbon monoxide (CO), which does act in the way you describe?

Carbon monoxide isn’t that pain free either. In fact, some studies have shown that CO is actually a much worse method than CO2, at least for rodents.

I don’t think anyone would recommend CO even if it was more humane, as it’d be much too dangerous for a layman to handle.

I guess it’s the simple fact that there really is no humane way to kill other living creatures…

I think it was CO2, at least when I tried googling it again (for recommended humane rodent/mice euthanasia), most results (of PDFs from associations or academia labs) seem to mention CO2, i.e https://www.bu.edu/research/ethics-compliance/animal-subjects/animal-care/euthanasia/carbon-dioxide-euthanasia-for-rats-and-mice/

But, I wouldn’t put it past me to confuse CO2 with CO, so I don’t know. I wouldn’t be surprised that the guidelines for anyone who has to kill mice will ethical-wash it so the people who have to follow it don’t feel too bad.

I’m gonna keep posting to expose these corrupt justices shielding animal torture house Brand Qualitätsfleisch.

Here is what should shock every single person reading this newsletter.

And as of June 19th — tomorrow — they are legally required to delete every image and every second of footage from that slaughterhouse, including everything they have posted online.

Let that sink in. The judges confirmed the footage was authentic. They confirmed it showed animal welfare violations. They confirmed it was in the public interest. And they still gave the slaughterhouse everything it asked for.

What is the name of the company?

They are using fucking CO2. It’s like they go out of their way to use something that causes extreme suffering

This is a repost of old news. (Also way less egrigeos than the headline)

Everytime a german claims to have free speech I just laugh.

Of all the gases we have in the air they use fucking C02. The ONE gas the body can detect and give a reaction to. This is like activw suffocation. Would they use C0 or maybe N they would just sleep away, but no, we have to make it hurt. As if a bolt through the skull wasn’t efficient enough and not enough suffering.

Though I won’t rule out purposeful cruelty, I assume that co2 is cheaper than nitrogen, because money is always the bottom line

it really really seems like cruelty is the point in so many industries, if it turns out they’re placating some fucking eldritch god i won’t even be surprised at this point

What exactly was the court’s reasoning for such a strong one-sided ruling? I feel like the article doesn’t adequately explain. This is about all we get:

The claimed damages stem from their entry into the slaughterhouse, the secret filming, and the publication of the footage […]

Let that sink in. The judges confirmed the footage was authentic. They confirmed it showed animal welfare violations. They confirmed it was in the public interest. And they still gave the slaughterhouse everything it asked for.

!! Trigger Warning !!

Link to the video they’re trying to scrub off the internet

Gas chambers for Jews were supported by Germans too, until the public learned what was happening inside.

Unfortunately, we never got rid of Nazis in the end. They just moved from openly shouting Nazi slogans as politicians to quietly discussing Nazi strategies behind closed doors as CEOs.

Nazi faithful survived for decades after the war in private clubs. There are no “ex Nazis”, once a person goes that far, they never come back.

…pigs fighting for their lives as CO₂ flooded the chamber. Struggling to breathe. Panicking. Bloodying their heads against the walls. Screaming.

I’m never going to watch that, but I’m willing to seed the video if anyone has a torrent for it.

I just read the title and wanted say:

..chill Germany..

Germany has been dropping the ball lately.

I think it’s a good example of what happens when you give power to a center-right liberal establishment. Angela Merkel appears to have been the guiding hand keeping the tiller from pulling too far right. Now that she’s out of the picture, the establishment is having a hard time managing its image. Merkel was great at engaging in rabid corporatism while presenting Germany as a voice of reason and ethical governing in Europe.

Without a strong leader to whip the gears of government in the same direction, the inherent bureaucracy in the German system is going to lead to gridlock that makes the whole government seem inept. Which of course leaves the far right space to breed among the contempt of the people. It’s beginning to feel a lot like we are beginning to collect the same spectre of problems that led to the fall of the Weimar Republic.

Streisand has entered the chat…

Go vegetarian

Germany is fucking up all over the place now.

Well, they’re only one of like 3 countries where smoking weed is legal, so…

It looks like that in Germany everything is a fair game when you are a pig or Palestinian.

Let’s see the footage then.

Whats the problem with pig gas chambers? Is it less humane?

Co2 can be effective as a mild anesthetic at certain percentage, causing relaxation and drowsiness. So can be used to euthanize animals humanely and without toxicity. If the levels rise above that threshold, you experience a burning throat and a feeling of suffocation. Which is not humane. I imagine it’s what the videos show.

Here is a paper on the topic, if you’re interested.

CO2 is an aversive stimulant to pigs, which is why they respond in these ways. CO2 irritates the mucosal lining of the trachea and nostrils, and when combined with natural bodily moisture, carbonic acid can also form on the eyes. CO2 causes acidosis (acidifying blood and tissues) and hypercapnia (excessive levels of CO2 in the blood), which creates a sense of breathlessness, hyperventilation, and “air hunger”.This is a significant animal welfare concern. Ultimately, unconsciousness is initiated by the cerebrospinal fluid of the brain becoming too acidic and the brain ceasing to function. It takes an average of 3–5 min for pigs to die within these CO2 pits.

Those are some great receipts, thank you.

I wonder why they wouldn’t use a different inert gas like nitrogen? It would be a much more humane way to euthanize any mammal, and it’s cheaper to produce on site.

Maybe these aren’t really gas “chambers” and are just open pits, and using c02 because it’s heavier than air?

using c02 because it’s heavier than air?

That’s the key reason. It’s cheaper to run an abattoir like that because of the throughput. Using gondolas you “dip” the batch of pigs in the gas simultaneously, all in the same cage, and rotate it to the unloading bay. No gas containment needed.

Ahh, yeah…. Unfortunately that’s kinda what I was figuring.

Animals cannot consent to murder.

Yes, it’s inhumane to murder.

there’s no humane way to eat animals, every country is part of the problem
