In other military systems, troops would’ve learned ad hoc from their elder peers until they gained an acceptable level of skill, or else been trained by their own community in the case of militia forces. The Romans, however, had a specialized position in the campidoctor - the chief drill instructor - doctores - subordinate drill instructors - and the hastilari - weapons instructors.
