I’d correct this into “You know they shouldn’t have been there in the first place.”
What the article describes is simply how Dubai works and has always worked. The only way to not know about it is by being willfully ignorant about human rights issues. The only way not to know is to be okay with it.
Since the people are okay with, I cannot understand why they suddenly act as if they were against the human rights abuse when it touches them. If you’re okay with it, then be okay with what you are okay with, for crying out loud!
And if you’re not okay with then… Don’t be okay with then, damnit!
I mean, it’s pretty simple. They’re okay with it as long as it doesn’t impact them, because they don’t give a crap about morals and others, they just care about their own wellbeing.
And that ends up with people feeling “betrayed” by Trump after voting for him knowingly, because this extreme self-centeredness makes people start having main character syndrome that tells them that the world is existing only to tell their amazing story.

Truth be told, the real crime is that he escaped unharmed.
No wealthy Western men are living in Dubai because they’re good people who don’t deserve to be beaten by the police.
