I’m not really sure where to post this, but wanted to share that screwing a 1/4-20 bolt into the bottom hole of my otherwise-sealed Philips Sonicare 4100 and just pulling on it successfully opens the toothbrush. An M6 screw might work too; M5 is slightly too small. Philips says to use a hammer to open it, which is absurd. The battery is still soldered, but in my case that wasn’t what I needed to repair anyway.

Yeah, not exactly BIFL but I am looking for a 50+ inch plasma tv for semi-retro gaming. I have some consoles that I want to hook up and I don’t want to deal with smart bullshit. Does anyone have a recommendation? I remember Pioneer being really nice back in the early 00s but I never knew anyone who had one long term.

Any idea about a hose-style shower head? I got one at Home Despot last year, worked fine, until a couple nights ago the thread fitting to the water pipe broke and it got water all over the place. The fitting turns out to be made of plastic that is shiny plated to look like metal!

I'd prefer to find something locally, and I doubt that I'd be able to find these particular models. However, I do not intend to use WiFi at all, so I wonder, are there any more recent routers that work 100% with libreCMC except for the WiFi? Preferably something with at least 4 Ethernet ports.

Right now I'm looking for either I think some ceramic cookware or stainless steel cookware, and I'm trying to make it a buy once cry once type of purchase, which would I think lean more towards stainless. I would just like a recommendation of how to compare durability/food safety and whatnot that isn't paid for via advertising dollars. Even direct recommendations for a brand I can look into are welcome.

I have a 14lb weighted blanket, but it is too heavy. I only use it on my legs or not at all. I live in a hot climate so I want a light blanket, but the two I own are often not quite warm enough on their own, and they feel too light.

Can anyone recommend a non-Swiffer mop product for very light mopping? I live in an apartment and the only places I need it for are my galley kitchen and bathroom, which are linoleum. I've just bought a backpack from Frost River, the "Arrowhead Trail Eco." I know that you can't assume that something is BIFL until you've owned it for a while, but waxed canvas definitely fits that long-lasting category, and this one certainly feels solid at first glance.

IBM Thinkpads have a cult following in part due to not just a good design out of the gate, but the fact that the original designer refused to bend to pressure to change the design every year. The parts are interchangable to large extent between models spanning what, 3—5 years? The guy was under constant pressure; was told to give consumers something fresh by changing up the design. Luckily wisdom prevailed and he disregarded such reckless advice by responding with the mantra: ”*if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!*”

Hi everyone, not sure if BIFL, as textiles are generally prone to wear out. I'm looking for good rainproof trousers. A little background: I'm commuting by bike, 7 km back and forth plus train commute, all year. Due to the geographical region (Germany) there is a good chance of unforseen rain.

I am own my own business and it is closed Mondays but I do a lot of ordering and paperwork from home on Mondays. I currently use TV trays as desk, one for my laptop and a second for my iPad and mouse/trackball. They are wobbly, and our cats like to jump onto them and I am always worried they will knock down my laptop.

When I'm logged in, I can only see four threads in this community. If I go to the community in a private window without being logged in, I can read all the threads. My user is on the same instance, so I should be able to see all threads - this can't be a federation issue. What's going wrong?

My current digital kitchen scales (Brabantia) go through batteries faster than I would like. I use rechargeable batteries, but still.

Hi there, I came here to the BIFL Lemmy out of suspicion that the reddit posts are just unlabelled marketing, and I was wondering the possibility of sourcing goods that are more to a BIFL standard? In my area, second hand goods tend to be really quite poor in quality (reselling fast fashion) or otherwise not present, and I have not inherited anything that does last. So I would apprecite advice or reccomendations for finding goods at a BIFL standard. I was also wondering if maybe there would be anyone with good advice for finding sustainable, local textile production so that I may be able to tailor what I need without having to buy from the poor selection aforementioned, does anyone know of any of this?

My big winter boots I have used for the last few years got a split in them today. I use them a lot as I walk about 1km a day to and from work. I have to walk up hills and on ice at times. Which boots should I buy that will be good quality, keep my feet warm and dry, and last repeated daily use?

I'm looking for a BIFL (or at least last me for a while) music player that can play .wav files, has a lot of storage, is portable, and the parts are able to be replaced/upgraded. I've heard about using iPod classics but it seems like they're unable to play .wav files. Any reccomendations?

Had an old Wahl just die after probably a good 20+ years, kind of looks like the cable is frayed and splitting where it connects to the trimmer. Did a quick check online and the new products don't even look remotely similar.

Looking for a buy it for life option for a lantern. Will mostly be used during power outages and only occasionally otherwise. Ideally it would hold a charge well and be bright enough to allow reading/puzzles/games/etc.

I basically listen to music constantly, and when I'm on holiday or riding my bike I generally use USB-C earbuds. I've had way too many wireless buds break and I'm sick of them, but these aren't fairing much better tbh.

Because I've been eating rice more often I realized via my energy bill that cooking in a pot on an electric plate for 30 minutes consumes massive amounts of electricity. Therefore I'm currently browsing for rice cookers, but the info on energy efficiency leaves much to be desired.

Hardware far outlasts software in the smartphone world, due to aggressive chronic designed obsolescence by market abusing monopolies. So I will never buy a new smartphone - don’t want to feed those scumbags. I am however willing to buy used smartphones on the 2nd-hand market if they can be liberated. Of course it’s still only marginally BifL even if you don’t have demanding needs.

(I know its not really buy-it-for-life, but it's a 100% cotton, no-stretch jeans which usually last me a couple of years)

So I was searching for a BIFL rainjacket that can do it all (as far as thats possible ofc ;)). Of course I stumbled upon the Patagonia Torrentshell, but when I went to try it on, it felt “saggy” and a bit short on the arms. As I plan to commute by bike, I prefer longer arms.
