This was a post on r/austin , which was, of course, removed by moderators, as so many are. I’m convinced that place is run by a bunch of fascist assholes, as the most important and relevant posts are locked or removed altogether.
This is weird. People in immigration proceedings are being picked up, taken to Texas, given repeat questioning and then released in Texas (sometimes with a new green card) to find their way home on their own. Anyone in @austin organizing help?
This is great news for our city. Urban Alchemy demonstrated they were run like a criminal enterprise, and kept people silent through retaliation and intimidation. There's a mountain of "allegations" against them, I'm glad something finally stuck. Kudos to the city for taking this step, other cities are having similar problems with them but haven't gone this far yet.
Got a notice in the mail that Texas gas has applied to raise rates yet again. This is in addition to the over $20 in monthly fees they charge you even if you don’t use their product.
If you're in the general Austin, TX area I highly recommend this driving school. Really helped build my kid's confidence. They have lessons for adults as well as teens. Including an advanced city driving class for licenced drivers who want to build confidence.
As Texas Republicans try to muscle a rare mid-decade redistricting bill through the Legislature to help Republicans gain seats in Congress -- at President Donald Trump's request -- residents in Austin, the state capital, could find themselves sharing a district with rural Texans more than 300 miles away.
"For the last couple of decades, we’ve been using this term sustainability. The inference of sustainability is we’re going to be able to maintain things, and that’s just not realistic,” UT-Austin’s urban ecosystems expert Stuart Reichler said. “The more realistic idea is one of resilience. We have to adapt. We’re already fucked.”
The Guadalupe River rose 26 feet in 45 minutes. There are 14 helicopters in the air rescuing those impacted by the floodwaters, as well as nine rescue teams with swimmers, and 400-500 responders on the ground.
Looks like Tesla is testing their autonomous vehicles in the neighborhood between Mabel Davis Park and Burleson Rd. Oh wait, Tesla didn't want us to know where this was happening...
Anyone heard anymore about opening satellite animal shelters around the city? This sounded like a great idea when it was proposed by city council, but I haven’t read anything about it since. Maybe it’s part of the “strategic plan” mentioned in the article.
Cedar Park, Texas, is a suburban enclave that most reminds me of Scottsdale, Ariz. Wide, tree-lined boulevards without much crime and with people going about their lives in their neighbourhoods.
New to Lemmy, hoping I can post this here. Reddit mods insisted I needed some apolitical post history before they'd allow me to post political events :/
This has to be the biggest batch of bullshit excuses I have ever heard. Gas, water, and sewer are all buried, but somehow burying electrical is “impossible”.
"Organizers said they were assured by city leaders for months that they would be able to produce the festival "without these impediments." They added that they were ultimately told the bollards would stay intact ... making it impossible to produce without a financial loss."
Let’s hope this shit doesn’t spread any further than Fredericksburg. Area was recently sent a Red Flag Warning — https://member.everbridge.net/892807736729515/weather/xSJJ5P09X
This keeps getting deleted and/or locked in r/austin , and it looks like media is trying to keep this hush. So, I thought I'd put this here for awareness.
And there are pretty active groups in Austin. It is pretty trivial to get a GMRS license for UHF walkie talkies and use of the GMRS repeaters around town, and not too hard to get the basic Technician license to get the real goods and talk far far away.
North/south roads are surprisingly icy while east/west roads are less so. Still showing a little. Definitely don't drive for a few hours if you don't have to although 35 seems OK. Saw some black ice too.
This is just greenwashing the original plan to add another natural gas power plant. What a scam. “Oh it could eventually run on hydrogen too. In five years. Maybe?”
The Celtic Festival was Nov 2-3. It is still low key and a lot of fun although I liked it better at Fiesta Gardens. Ticketing was a little bit of a pain with the silly SI app.
I know this will sound callous of me, but fuck this NIMBY bullshit, and also KVUE for promoting it. This apartment complex is going up a 60 second walk from the Highland Station on the Red Line. Throw a rock and you can hit both Airport Blvd and 2222. This is the geographical center of Austin near some of the busiest intersections in the city. It's not reasonable to expect the vacant lot behind your house will stay that way.
