Explanation: Under the brutal Maoist regime of Pol Pot, nearly a fourth of the country was horrifically butchered in the name of party unity. Amongst other petty crimes, like disagreeing with The Party(tm), you might be executed simply for being a dangerous intellectual - after all, you might commit wrongthink, or have connections with foreign bourgeois! And if you wore glasses, that was awfully suspicious, wasn’t it?
Not a conviction in and of itself, but a reason for good, honest supporters of Brother Number One to start digging into your ‘story’ about being a good communist. Isn’t it true that you sent mail abroad a few years ago, ‘comrade’…?
Eventually, despite support for Cambodia from the USA and Communist China, Communist Vietnam would invade and put down Pol Pot’s regime. Though the Vietnamese government was hardly saintly, it was a hell of a lot better than unrestrained butchery of the nation. Rare leftist infighting W.

Oh no! A brutal and Maoist regeime? I’m sure that word wasn’t put there for political reasons
Refusing to acknowledge brutality or downplaying political affiliations is, itself, political. Not sure what you want to accomplish here.
I don’t think people would give a shit that it was “"Maoist"”
That would be strange for folk not to care, considering their actions were pretty linked to their ideological conceptions of Maoism.
Fair
Pol Pot was absolutely one of THE most detestable human beings to have besmirched the green face of this earth. I remember watching the Cambodia episode of no reservations on a short flight. And unlike most of the Anthony Bourdain repertoire, it made me furious.
Pol Pot: “Oh I will do way worse to counterrevolutionaries like you.”
