ICE Is Using a New Facial Recognition App to Identify People, Leaked Emails Show

submitted by panopticurious

https://www.404media.co/ice-is-using-a-new-facial-recognition-app-to-identify-people-leaked-emails-show/

The new tool, called Mobile Fortify, uses the CBP system which ordinarily takes photos of people when they enter or exit the U.S., according to internal ICE emails viewed by 404 Media. Now ICE is using it in the field.

Upload a photo of an LAPD cop to identify them. It's not ICE or all jurisdictions, but it's a start.

Facial recognition gets more false positives on POC. This is just an excuse to lock up innocent people.

63

I went to look for this article about two black men who look similar, and found a recent case of similar looking men that were arrested, resulting in a dismissed conviction against one

I don't think they look identical in pictures, personally, but am also aware of how faulty eyewitness testimony is

It's difficult to identify cops when they hide their name, badge number, and face. And when they get extra, pro bono legal support when challenged.

And those are just the developments from this year that I can recall.

Edit: this was supposed to be a reply to @NoiseColor@lemmy.world but either my app broke or I'm half blind

24

Great, let's all fucking wear masks again -_-

by panopticurious OP depth: 2

It's your right until they ban it

13

Many red states have banned wearing masks at protests.

16

Already have some places.

3

Can't people identify these agents?

This is exactly why so many of them are masked.

13

I meant like forensically finding out who they are. It can be done and I bet there is a lot of people online who would pitch in.

6

So this is why GOP just introduced a bill in MI that would allow the police to force you to remove your mask. Good thing ICE is not police so they can fuck off if they tell me to remove my mask.

https://www.wlns.com/capital-rundown/bill-would-allow-police-to-make-you-remove-your-mask/

14

“The app uses CBP's Traveler Verification Service and the Seizure and Apprehension Workflow that contains the biometric gallery of individuals for whom CBP maintains derogatory information for facial recognition,” the email reads. The exact definition of derogatory information in this context is not clear but 404 Media has previously reported on a database that ICE uses to find “derogatory” speech online.

I shouldn't be shocked or surprised, and yet, I am. Fuck this.

8

remember when they demanded you take off your mask at the no kings protest?

Comments from other communities

And the people are using crowdsourcing to identify lCE.

32

Be kind. Bring them free food and drinks. Get them to drop their guard and their masks. Door dash can be heroic.

14

And it’s down

6

Run these assholes that claimed to be USPS employees.

We have apps the doxx the ICE agents. Let's see who blinks. A few thousand cowards or millions of citizens? We know of at least 5 million on no kings day

It's time to line up and stand up. If one works for the federal government in a law enforcement capacity and hasn't quit yet, that person is a traitor and a coward.

13

And now you know why they don't want other people to be able to wear masks

27

that's a good way to get your phone smashed.

9

The irony of masked individuals using facial recognition on people.

79

ICE officers are consistently wearing masks, neck gaiters, sunglasses, and baseball caps to mask their identity while detaining people.

Privacy invasion for thee, not for me.

41

Try using the infrared settings if you have them. You can potentially use it to photograph them through the masks and glasses.

10

Really sounds like this database is based primarily on biometrics obtained during legal immigration and travel.

I wonder how it will identify those who came through illegal means? Unless that's totally not the point. Hmmm...

34

There's no model that can differentiate between 7 billion people. They all come with a limit. I didn't check the current latest model, because a few years ago when I worked in the field, such models shit themselves beyond 20million people.

Just to say, using face detection only, like these pieces of shit are doing, will for sure make them detain people who have nothing to do with anything.

This is why I'm avoiding traveling through tsa during Trump's presidency

Praying for another Christoper Dorner

Unmask and dox these cowardly racist motherfuckers.

18

There is now a website doing exactly that:

<https://icelist.info/>

10

That's returning a "406 Not Acceptable" response. I've never even seen one except in http docs.

3

One time I saw an http 418, but I think someone just configured it wrong on purpose.

Probably thanks to Palandir...

I'm never setting foot in the US again. Thank goodness I'm Canadian.

Watch out for Bill C2. It requires companies to collect data on you (Canadian citizens) and shields them from "accidentally" oversharing it.

https://piefed.social/post/974112

15

Yes, I'm aware. I've signed a petition against it.

5

shields them from “accidentally” oversharing it

Could you please clarify? Is that referring to legal protection in the case of a consumer data breach? Because that'd be highly objectionable

3
by panopticurious depth: 4

All I can tell you is what I read on the linked page because I haven't analyzed the bill itself.

Impact on ALL Canadians:

Companies must keep records of your personal data under secret government orders, with blanket immunity for privacy violations for handing over more than they should.

2

It can happen to you, too. Stay vigilant.

Facial recognition apps are notoriously inaccurate when it comes to minority faces, but I suppose they think that's a benefit :(

11

It just means they get to disappear more minorities.

6

They're indentifying people to dissapear now? Sh*t, they weren't stopped in time and now this street-gang-with-nazi-ties is using technology to target the vulnerable. I told you they were practicing.

9

Anyone have a link to the company who made it? My morning searchfu is failing me.

5

I'm sure this is completely accurate technology and isn't racist in any way. /S

117

I'm sure they don't know that and they totally didn't pick this inaccurate method on purpose too /s

38

It recognizes any race?

4

Some more accurately than others.

Looks like Palantir's shit is already in action...

56

Decline to use facial rec at airports due to this shit

24

"Well, you know where the exit is."

6

They already have your face when you got your license @ your local DMV.

9

Don't be defeatist. Every new capture benefits them, and every refusal takes that away from them.

10

Decline? You think you have a choice?

10

You actually explicitly do have a choice

12

Just imagining this and laughing. "Actually gestapo, it's my right to not be disappeared against my will!"

-6

I've done it. Recently. Walked up with my palm covering the camera so it didn't see me while I approached, stepped to the side of it once I could, said I opt out, and went through.

3

You idiot. I said in my post "decline at the airport" - meaning decline when the TSA asks to do it at airport security Not when ICE tries to take picture on a street

5

You think TSA (a part of DHS) and ICE (also a part of DHS) are somehow disconnected and not working hand in hand towards the same exact goal?

-2

"Yes, you can opt out of TSA facial recognition"

https://www.travelandleisure.com/how-to-opt-out-tsa-facial-recognition-at-airport-11726739

You can opt out at the airport. That's a fact. Not sure how that relates to whatever you're saying but doesn't matter because whatever you are saying is not relevant to the conversation.

7

Bear in mind what AOC told us about the "Big Beautiful Bill". ICE now has a bigger budget than the FBI, DEA and Bureau of Prisons combined. After they zip-tie you and throw you in the van they can light their Cuban cigars with $100 bills.

23

Wearing masks is legal.

16

... for now.

6

They’re trying to criminalize it in my state

4

Considering that the US still does not have any kind of working national census, and only relies of the deeply flawed social security system for a national ID database, I wonder how accurate this system is

30

Considering they're just looking for a pretext to arrest someone, I think it's accurate enough for them.

25

They probably just use Facebook + LinkedIn or other public databases. I remember a project on hackaday of someone who did something similar and found with some basic programming, it's definitely possible to get some matches. But that was years ago.

4

They are using the CBP database according to that article.. who knows what version two will have though

2

Hello Americans... welcome to the forth Reich!

13

I predict it being ubiquitous one day, where everyone has the ability to id others. It's already a thing in los Angeles. Also, I was just reading about how a person's gait can be used to identify someone, so wearing a mask won't be enough. Technology is just gonna get better.

10

Try reading my gait when I'm on an escooter/bike/whatever and recognising my face from behind a full face helmet. (I'm just being safe.)

8

People use reverse image search today to stalk women. It's horrible

4

Using facial id software on people while wearing a fucking mask. What happened, guys?! I thought you couldn't breathe under there!

I thought they didn't care about the identity and just kidnapped whoever they felt like. Do they really need this?

8

Wear Juggalo make up. Doubt they are using depth perception. Since that data would probably not be available.

8

Got it. So everyone wears cardboard cut out masks.

6

What would happen if these people started those bleaching tablets, like MJ used...

3

time for every immigrant to change style, grow a beard/shave it, change hair cut. start using makeup.

question, would that work?

3

That just makes me wanna wear my nondescript ball cap & aviators with a medical mask.
