I'm not really into Matrix and not familiar with how it operates, but... over 14% of the yearly costs of the Foundation is the Executive Director salary, while server infrastructure in comparison is only 20%? And they need more money to run the home instance?
Skilled technologist rarely work for free. Expecting a well run service by only hiring devs out of school willing to work for 100k a year is a pipe dream.
Their goal last year was £900k I don't think they got it but even then that would place executive pay at £123k yearly salary. Doesn't seem excessive to me. More worried about their employees on average making around £45k.

People should stop using this corrupt central point of failure server, not fund it. Fund small distributed ones, pay 10 bucks to your nerdy friend to run Hetzner instance. Actually, yeah, I'm one of those nerdy friends, CoI, but really, the whole point of protocol is decentralization.
I think that's a good idea. Even more since it's just about media so I don't have limits on messaging
