When the Nintendo Wii launched in 2006 it didn't include HDMI - so let's add it using the ElectronAVE, a kit that keeps it all digital for a nice crispy video output!

One of the best things about owning a Wii U is that it's fully Wii compatible so you get HDMI on Wii games without having to do any mods. I wonder if that's why Nintendo didn't have a digital output on the original Wii? Were they saving that for a later model, which ended up being the next console?
@fedivideo@fedi.video The Wii U's handling of Wii games isn't all that great, actually. Yes, it does run Wii games and outputs over HDMI, but it can be a bit weird about scaling and aspect ratio. So if you're kind of particular about that stuff, running on an original Wii can be a better solution.
@wavebeam@spectra.video Ah interesting, didn't know! Seemed alright on my games but I didn't have it side by side with a Wii.
@fedivideo@fedi.video it's not really a huge deal for most people. sickos like me like to try to dial things in to the "intended" output ratio and resolution and the Wii U just doesn't quite nail it. but it's totally fine! I will say that they definitely didn't hold digital out as in incentive to upgrade, it's just that they found it an unnecessary expense. the gamecube's original model had it, a bet on potential adoption of new display tech, but then when it didn't pan out quite so aggressively for consumers, the pulled the digital out on a later revision of the gamecube and made a more modest upgrade to component out for analog only on the wii.
I am not sure I would have the fortitude to try that flex PCB onto via soldering - great job. I will stick to the "dongle"
