Reminder to be careful out there and ride with a camera recording and your helmeted head on a swivel because you never know who isn't paying attention to the road!
I don't think the content of what he was watching bears anything on the fact that he was distracted and not watching the road. He could have been watching cat videos and the results would have been the same.
One could argue that the type of person who watches right-wing propaganda shouldn't be given authority of the state and a firearm. If he was watching cat videos, he would simply be a careless dipshit who killed someone because he's stupid. Instead, we know he is a careless dipshit who killed someone and is also a fascist piece of shit who shouldn't have been a cop in the first place.
I'd argue that he was perfect for being a united states cop. police have no obligation to save you as per a 2000s Supreme Court ruling. if you're bleeding out and someone is actively murdering you right in front of them.
The police only protect property and corporations in the US. any other developed western country I can't think does this.
Unless his record of conduct in his department is clean. It's entirely possible to not take your political beliefs out on people. Now, if he has a record of abuse of power that's a complete different and separate issue.
He has a record of watching fascist content while driving and killing a cyclist. I'm not inclined to give any benefit of doubt.

If you believe trans people are mentally ill, you will take that context into every situation. No one is so mentally perfect as to avoid that. Especially not cops.
Every time someone tells me to be careful riding the bike I remind them that people looking at their phones is the biggest risk above anything else.
Immediately asking if they can tell other people makes me think they remember it at least for them. Hopefully.

Oh it's ok though cause they are trained to watch YouTube and crap while driving...it's the training that makes them better people and immune to laws. /s
I'm shocked their tablets have access to anything but what they need for work. There's no reason it should but plenty why it shouldn't.
Some private sector employees canโt access anything but what they need.
I had an argument with a friend about this recently. A local cop was watching porn while at a highway construction point, sitting in his car with lights and sirens on. The only reason he was caught was because someone died within eyeshot and he didn't budge.
My friend argued that they should keep unlimited access and with unlimited data because they have nothing to do while they get paid to sit in their cruisers with the lights on and car running. His sister does it all the time for overtime pay and has watched and re-watched just about every tv show out there.
I used to ride so much in California, over 3000 miles actually, but have only managed three rides in close to a decade in Vermont because the roads don't feel nearly as safe, despite having only a tiny fraction of the traffic. There's just no room on most roads out here for bikes, they're nearly all just two lanes with no shoulder with blind corner after blind corner.
Strike breakers
slave catchers
class traitors
Cops are paid killers for capitalism
Protect and serve? More like distracted and forgot to swerve. Watching Matt Walsh trash too, not surprised a cop would watch that trash.
Great, now we need to advocate for both protected bike lanes AND taking away their brainrot devices at the same time!!
I really like this article format and hope to see more of it. It is stating the facts, outlining it in easy chunks for average American, but doesn't include any flourishes that tell the reader how to feel about it or how the author feels about it.
was watching right-wing influencers
At first, I was thinking stake-out and thought great, someone needs to keep an eye on those assholes, too bad they're a shitty driver.
As annoying as that is? I don't care WHAT he was watching.
Cop hit a cyclist. Regardless of anything else. That needs to be put on blast 24/7 until we get some nation wide reformation on punishments. Won't happen. Because cop.
But I want that pig drownd.
I don't condone violence, but when peaceful change is made impossible then what else are people supposed to do?
This is why democracy is so important and why having a two party oligarchy isn't good enough. The US needs an actual democracy ASAP
there doesn't appear to be any interaction with the computer in the 11 minutes that matter.
So? When driving your meant to be alert and looking at your surroundings? Not a fucking YouTube video.
Is this not illegal? It would be massively illegal in the UK, not sure for where this occured.
Yeah distracted driving is illegal in Vermont. My friend once literally got pulled over in VT for having an air freshener hanging from her rearview mirror and that constituting โdistracted drivingโ because it obscured her view ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
But cops in the US are functionally above the law.
The law in question:
It's illegal for normal citizens in the US to have any TV-like screen (including laptops) in their field of view (basically in the front portion of the car). I think that's the case in every state, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong. Cops get a pass because they use laptops for work.
At the very least, the laptops in police cruisers should be locked out of any kind of social media, entertainment sites, etc. I mean Hell, my brother is a mechanic, and the laptops they use at work aren't allowed to have any of that stuff on them. Just parts portals, diagnostic tools, etc.
Cops are above the law in America.
Come on Canada how can you hear that and not want to bend over and join us? /s
