LA’s Wildfires Threaten Almost 40 Prisons and Jails. Here’s How They’re Responding.

As of Thursday evening, none of the nearly 100 kids incarcerated in the facility have been moved to safety, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Probation Department told The Appeal. The probation department oversees the county’s juvenile facilities.

Seven jails are within 1.5 miles of the largely uncontained fires. None responded when asked about their plans to protect incarcerated people from air quality issues or potentially evacuate.

Am I the only one who is amazed that there are 40 jails in reach of a single fire? Yeah, it's a ginormous fire but how many prisons are there in LA?
