Anyone using it as a daily driver?

I'm not sure if cosmic will really be the right fit for me, but man am I excited it exists

Can't wait to see what the first really usable build for average end users looks like!

Looking good! Has there been any word on the beta track?

Yeah, I've had a developer tell me that they've done most of the beta milestone already. There will be an Alpha 6, however, so the absolute earliest we could see Beta 1 is end of February, assuming Alpha 6 releases end of January, and they move into Beta after that with no delays.

According to the releases so far, and how far ahead the code has come, and how many bugs it has still, i'd say that 1.0 will probably come around August or September. I'm running Cosmic and it's still not there, too many rough edges.

I had cosmic running recently on one ssd and it was pretty solid for that short period of time. I’ll keep checking in!

Will we be able to upgrade to v1.0 in place?

Given they have a massive install base on PopOS GNOME that they've targeted for use friendliness, I think they're going to plan for an in place upgrade.

Pure speculation though

COSMIC DE is really starting to look amazing. I can't wait to daily drive it.

Can we have virtio support please?

Year alright... As a pop os kde user it's frustrating as hell. They're holding up the entire 24.04 release in alpha for a desktop I don't want and will not use.

What keeps you on Pop_OS if you're using KDE?

It's a pain to switch?

If you're not planning to use COSMIC once it releases you might consider switching distros in the long run to something else. Maybe Kubuntu?

Otherwise it seems like the big effort to deliver COSMIC should be a one-time thing and I assume Pop will resume a more normal release schedule once that move is done, so you shouldn't have to wait so long the next time around.

I mean - yeah I could switch. But it's a pain. I'm not a kiddie distro-hopper.

It's not such a pain to switch with separate home and root, it would take an hour for me

What's the catch?

I just don't feel like it? Do I need to have a robust and well-thought out reason?

Don't they normally delay against Ubuntu by a year...?

They are rewriting so much stuff. Why the media player? Are VLC and mpv not enough? Text editor, file manager, screenshot tool, terminal, ... couldn't that all have gone into other stuff?

As much as I'm excited for COSMIC I'm a bit bothered by this too.

for the media player, quoted from mmstick (phoronix.com)

A video player is probably the easiest app to implement because it's based on the iced video player widget. It's just a matter of porting it to COSMIC. And there's no reason not to add a video player to the core lineup if it can be done. Every OS has a default system video player.
