PeerTube is a decentralized and federated alternative to YouTube. The goal of PeerTube is not to replace YouTube but to offer a viable alternative using the strength of ActivityPub and P2P protocols.
Being built on ActivityPub means PeerTube is able to be part of a bigger social network, the Fediverse (the Federated Universe). On the other hand, P2P technologies help PeerTube to solve the issue of money, inbound with all streaming platform : With PeerTube, you don't need to have a lot of bandwidth available on your server to host a PeerTube platform because all users (which didn't disable the feature) watching a video on PeerTube will be able to share this same video to other viewers.
If you are curious about PeerTube, I can't recommend you enough to check the official website to learn more about the project. If after that you want to try to use PeerTube as a content creator, you can try to find a platform available there to register or host yourself your own PeerTube platform on your own server.
The development of PeerTube is actually sponsored by Framasoft, a french non-for-profit popular educational organization, a group of friends convinced that an emancipating digital world is possible, convinced that it will arise through actual actions on real world and online with and for you!
If you want to contribute to PeerTube, feel free to:
- report bugs and give your feedback on Github or on our forums
- submit your brillant ideas on our Feedback platform
- Help to translate the software, following the contributing guide
- Make a donation to help to pay bills inbound in the development of PeerTube.

FYI Framasoft, non profit behind PeerTube also has an official Lemmy community on !framasoft@lemmy.world , I was surprised to see how small it is, so give them a follow
Allow me to share this growing list of content creators on PeerTube, for those interested: https://lemmy.wtf/post/15810205
So any instance recommendations?
e: Apprebtly peertube has livestreaming. Any instances I can use to stream games I can't stream on youtube privately to my discord groups?
I would also like to know this. I'd rather not start making content only to realize I picked an instance with insufficient resources or that's just going to disappear in a couple of months.
It is getting better although I wish they would focus on international users. I don't speak French and I think most people are in the same boat as me. They should prioritize English more so that people aren't having to translate. Maybe they could look into some sort of auto translation
The other major issue is that lack of good federation. There are tons of random instances that have lots of junk. I want a way to have quality content from all instances rise to the top of every instance. Lemmy has nailed this and it would be cool of Peertube did the same.
Peertube also has a content problem. All of the content is niche to anti big tech and Linux.
I agree. They have a language filter but if the video has English subtitles they seem to think that's good enough...
Mastodon is the same way. I think the default language is English and just no one bothers to change it when they post...
What do you mean they should focus on international users?
Check out this post for PeerTube platforms (instances) that federate with many others. Then have a look at this page for the trending videos sorted by "hot": https://peertube.wtf/videos/browse?sort=-hot&c=true&s=3

New content can be difficult to discover on PeerTube, but I find new interesting channels almost every day.

Is federation still whitelist based?
If it is thats dumb af
Do people just let their IP be known or use something else with peertube?
You can *not* torrent the videos if you are scared of that, it's a toggle.
