It turns out that Meta's Threads.net platform is building a groups feature that they curiously named Loops, and we feel the need to polish the app and Loops platform further so we can maintain the communities expectations.

Ugh. Already being bad neighbors in the fediverse.

13

That is a really stupid name, though. Common words are very clash happy (as seen here) and nearly impossible to search for.

I choose Skynet. Can I choose Skynet?

45

Do we get a choice? Because I also vote for Skynet.

17

I also vote for Skynet and the inevitable nuclear Armageddon.

May the atomic spark be struck, and spears of purifying nuclear flame rain from above.

9

If it's between that and another TikTok, yes please do. These choices are as painful as a US presidential election.

1

I've never cared much about TikTok but old Vine memes make me wish I had been more involved with that platform. If Loops ends up being cool, it might be neat to help pioneer something for once.

22

Dansup (the creator of mentioned site) runs several projects including Pixelfed (federated Instagram) but also an AP messenger (which doesn't seem very useful to me imo).

19

What's an AP messenger? (This better not be the setup for a punchline).

2

Messenger that uses ActivityPub as protocol.

4

Good luck to the creator. Pixelfed works well for me, despite being a bit empty, both on my instance and globally. The bones are there though and I personally prefer the way it works over Mastadon's Twitterish format. I wish I could use Mastadon more because that's where the mist fediverse users seem to be, but even decades later, Twitter style interfaces do not make sense to me. I'm a smart, nerdy, millennial, who grew up with computers. I can make sense of the IRS's 1040 form without using turbo tax, but for some reason I can't make sense of this horrible illogical interface that millions of people love.

In regards to the tiktok tok style app, I think it'll have a good chance of success simply because it is TikTok's less assholey cousin and even though many people will trade privacy for functionality, tiktok is about due to become a lame, cringe app for old folks.

37

but even decades later, Twitter style interfaces do not make sense to me

Oh I feel the pain

14

I haven't used Pixelfed, but does it fail to work with with microblogging fedi platform content so bad that you feel you'd have to use Mastodon? Outside of the group/community/threadiverse federation issues in Masto and Lemmy not letting you follow accounts, I my understanding was everything worked pretty well talking to eachoter.

3

I am betting on Skynet.

18

God, I hope so.

AI apocalypse sounds much better than anything the current timeline can offer.

15

Certainly better than more TikTok...

4

I'm predicting stupid skynet. It will want to kill humanity but by making stupid suggestions.

"Hey maybe try drinking poison today?"

No.

"Please?"

No.

"What if I gave you a recipe for poison cookies? You like cookies. Will you please eat poison cookies?"

No.

"Can you build a robot for me if I send you clips from a Terminator movie?"

Which one?

"Terminator Genysys"

NO.

6

I'd prefer Skynet if I'm gonna be honest.

15

my money is on it being skynet

11

FederatedTok seems like it could be a good idea, depending on what kind of algorithm they come up with, or if each server creates their own.

Will be an interesting experiment to say the least.

10

Fedtok or Tikfed or TikfedTok

2

FedTok sounds like a government spy program

4

Alright! Ticked it is!

3

If there's not a client app called "Ticked", I will be.

3

I think this one is especially tricky because it seems to be all about The Algorithm (I hate that "the algorithm" has become a thing people say, but you probably know what I mean when I say it). The secret sauce that makes it work is the algo, which is very data driven, and how that works on a federated platform I'm not sure.

I desperately want something like this to succeed though, it's exciting seeing major projects taking off. I've been on Lemmy since the beginning, and it is quite big now. Mastodon had a surge, probably the surge that federation needed. But I think Loops could potentially prove to be the most significant one yet. I can't say this model of content consuming is ideal, necessarily, but I think the important thing is showing that it can be federated.

I don't know who remembers the dog days of friendica and diaspora being our only hopes. Those were dark times, and now things are really taking off.

6

Despite your (and my) personal feelings about this type of media consumption, it's the current mainstream thing and could be a driving force into making federated platforms more visible. There's a million FakeTok apps out there, it'll be interesting to see what happens when a decentralized competitor hits the market.

As much as I hate it, I feel like I *need* to participate to make sure it gains enough traction to matter...

FOR *SCIENCE!*

3

That was actually why I was initially so active on Lemmy as well. I have been a bit dispirited by pro-Russian trolls arguing in bad faith and ingratiating themselves with frequent article posting, getting a pass from Lemmy admins. So I've been a bit disappointed lately. And I expect they will push into federated short form video. I'm not sure what the solution is other than to hope for better admins.

But that said, it's all in the backdrop, and in the foreground is the fact that the fediverse can be built out over the internet to handle social media and rebalance it away from all-or-nothing death star level control of individual companies. That, to me, is a win. And the only way it wouldn't be a win is if, I think, companies show they are up to the task of containing trolls, and that a fediverse wild west is exposed to coordinated inauthetic activity in a way that can't be controlled.

4

I’ll be passing on that.

I don’t enjoy my content being the same format as advertising.

Glad to hear of any federated internet updates though.

Do you feel the same way about Mastadon? Twitter was the "look at me" social media. I feel like you just shout things into the void and people give you points for agreeing with you. Its impossible to carry on a real conversation on Twitter (a proper threaded message board like Lemmy excels at this). It seems tied in with the cult of personality whereas we need to shift to a culture of ideas.

I'm probably just a stupid millennial who doesn't get it, but Lemmy seems like the only really good fediverse structure.

24

I feel like you just shout things into the void and people give you points for agreeing with you.

Lol at first I thought this was a direct criticism of the person you were replying to.

5

Do you feel the same way about Mastadon?

Yes.

I'm not sure that's my reason, but I've never understood Twitter/Mastodon. It's just shouting into a void.

11

Fully agree, I have masto/pixelfed client on my phone but Lemmy is the the one I used most by a long shot.

Idk why it is but on other platforms I feel like I'm intruding on someone else's conversation, but I can freely reply here no problem (to some extent).

4

Right. And if you say something constructive, we can respond, and if you don't, the conversation branch dies.

Twitter/Mastadon do feel weird in that way, but I am thankful for Mastadon's success even if it's not really for me.

2

🤞 please be Skynet, please be Skynet🤞

7

It's probably just Chris Jericho again doing Chris Jericho things.

7

Looks like the timer pushed back. Now it’s at 12 days.

3

are they going to sell bulk nitrogen gas?

3

We dont need more tiktok like sites.

We need to kill the ones that already exist.

They are social cancer.

21

isn't it mostly because of their overly addictive recommendation algorithms? taking away infinite scrolling would also help a lot to make it more healthy.

I know people, 40+ in age, who just want to see some fun videos in their work breaks, when nobody's around to talk with

21

People were able to watch funny videos long before tiktok. Tiktok is cancer.

6

I really hope to see more queer centric content, and less hate generally.

7

release it or dont. i hate this spamvertisement/countdown bullshit

20

It's marketing. People do it because it works.

31

Yeah but vertical videos are cancer, so...

2

TikTok x Fediverse should be the worst conbination possible. Ben diagram with no space shared

Never seen that image before. I love that

4

Remindme! 4 days

-2

Postponed 11 days unfortunately due to Meta shenanigans

2

Good to know, cheers!

2

Looks like you needed to actually @ the bot, but here's your late reminder. Unfortunately Loops got postponed about a week due to Meta being a-holes and naming a different thing Loops, but they should hopefully be up next Sunday.

2

It's a pretty bold move to launch an open source service like this, especially one that is as complex as a video sharing site. One would think a gradual increase of user base would be easier to handle than a sudden influx of people at a moment when one has been scrambling to meet a deadline.

Good thing they/he is not afraid of postponing the release and making sure it's ready. And if it works well it will be one hell of a release. Fingers crossed. :)

38

12 days going by that counter...

18

yeah, i think they're resetting the counter back.

last time i open that page, the counter rests at 5 hours left.

11

Every time you look, they add another day

2

Why not. I know a lot of people are into this.

I'm personally not interested in seeing video clips on Pixelfed, so I hope they can be hidden in account settings.

But respect to Pixelfed developers who seem to do a great job - it's awesome.

Edit: looked properly at loops and it looks like it's a totally separate thing to Pixelfed. Happy days!

15

I'll probably give it a try w curious to see what the content will look like

And this is why we dont do countdowns...

9

Everything I hate it’s finally coming to the fediverse! Yay!

36

Federated LinkedIn incoming

58

(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

15

Then federated Microsoft Teams

27

We have federated NextCloud Talk :)

4

Federated LinkedIn would still be better than LinkedIn.

4

Its not about us its about migrating the global narrative to a free as in freedom platform.

23

I’m excited, I love how information dense and educational short form content can be.

29

Our kids hardly get an education as it is. When those who hate paying their fair share of taxes throw a fit, politicians always make sure that they get to voice their opinions, publicly and loudly.

Makes you wonder: who’s buying all of these politicians? And it’s always the Republicans trying to take your rights away from you.

-8

Hmm so Loops by Pixelfed is a GOP psyops to take my rights away? Scary stuff.

20

That’s a leap even our Olympic gymnasts knew better than to try.

-4

Hopefully the Fediverse will be able to have a better take on how to do shortform video than other platforms.

5

For me, I hate the influencer culture around many of these things. On paper, loops, and the like, are good ideas, but when you fill it with people with MBAs trying to sell you things, it feels fake and goes to shit. My experience so far with the fediverse is that it feels generally organic and I have no reason to believe loops would be any different.

4

I wasn't sure whether I'll say something similar or I'll keep it to myself
