Roblox was broken on Deck and linux by the addition of a new anti-cheat
Afaik, it wasn't broken. The Roblox devs put in extra work to block Linux users from playing because according to them "the majority of cheaters are on Linux". Who knows if that's true
I doubt that's true. Linux is barely 2% of the overall gaming market. 4% if you include general desktop users. I do not believe for a second that a tiny fraction of 2% who play roblox are "mostly" cheaters.
What's more likely is they're Windows users who are running a VM to circumvent the anticheat, and the Officers are too lazy to pay their devs to come up with a viable anticheat that doesn't exclude people.
I was hoping it would be a wrapper so could be used for other games like minecraft, but seems customized to Roblox and closed source.
There's already a similar project for Minecraft- https://mcpelauncher.readthedocs.io/en/latest/
but seems customized to Roblox and closed source
You don't have to give multiple reasons for one to avoid Roblox
Just logged in for the first time in years and this was the first thing recommended. Fuckin' grooming simulator
I know people are pretty dismissive of roblox (myself included), but it’s hugely popular and it’s always good to have the option.
Yeah I mean, to be honest the first time I saw this post I scrolled past and was like "meh, I'd rather just play Wobbly Life"....
...but then I saw this post again and thought... damn actually this is a pretty huge win for the Steam Deck and Linux gaming in general!!
Even if the person buying the Steam Deck doesn't give a shit about being able to play Roblox... if they have a kid who likes to play video games... then there is a decent chance that kid plays Roblox with their friends which for the parent/family member adds a huge amount of value to the Steam Deck, and for a non-zero amount of kids who will now inevitably play Roblox on their parent's/family's Steam Deck because of this, Roblox will be their first introduction to Linux... and those kids will think of Linux as a no bullshit way to play Roblix ....which is *objectively* cool!
Also, it is easy to dismiss Roblox and stereotype games built on its game engine platform as all being of a certain type... and fundamentally unpolished/amateur in design. There are some genuinely awesome games on Roblox though, he is a short list of some FPS games (because that is mostly what I look for in 3d games) but also I will include other types of games if I find any especially good ones:
Phantom Forces - a Call Of Duty Modern Warfare clone, *check it out* before you judge

Project Delta - open world multiplayer survival shooter set in post apocalyptic wasteland

Do you know any good, mechanically polished games on the Roblox platform?

People normally play this drunk?
Sober is not a way to play this, IMHO.
Reminder that the owner of this gamingonlinux site was a mod on this Lemmy community until they got called out for mod abuse to which they responded by deleting their lemmy account because they didn't know mod logs are public.
Do we seriously need to play roblox on linux?
There are people who play Roblox. Would you rather they only have the option of playing on Windows?
Yes this game isn't a game, it's a online working platform for kids in disguise. It should not be even legal in the first place.
My kids want to play Roblox, and I don't want windows,. So yes, playing Roblox on Linux would be nice.
You should (if you haven't already) do a little research about roblox before let your kids play on it.
I suggest these two videos : - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_gXlauRB1EQ - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vTMF6xEiAaY
You let them play roblox? Even the most tech clueless dad I know doesn't let his kids play it due to the predatory practices
Its popular with the kids. You don't have to play it.
You should stay on windows then, it's very popular... Kids should stay on windows, it's very popular with them. And we should never refuse something popular to kids obviously...
You're missing the point, please go read responses I made to the others answers I've got.
No one said we need to play roblox on linux. We WANT to play roblox on Linux because its our computer and we want the freedom to play what we choose and not be arbitrarily limited by an asshole game studio.
Thanks for your reply :)
I think the problem with roblox goes far beyond the individual freedom to access a program.
What we both say isn't mutually exclusive. But I do think that gaming Linux communities could take a stand on the kind of gaming world we want and the kind we don't want...
Looking at the downvotes I get here and setting aside people who don't like/understand irony, I feel either there are a bunch of roblox-fan (I sincerely hope it's not it) or there are people like you who took the individual freedom to use a computer and apply it with crushing dogmatism (but without taking the time to expend on it like you did). But do gnu/Linux communities have to be chain to this ? I'm not sure. When twitter was shit, do we just said 'never mind it runs on Linux, we're free.' ? Or reddit or Facebook ? No we discouraged actively to use those platforms and we build alternative that are better for people. Here what do we have ? A gaming platform with predatory practices toward children and we give it access to our computer without even the game studio had to lift a finger for it. A new (and small yes, but still) market of users for what you called yourself a 'asshole game studio'.
We don't need to play anything on Linux.
What would you rather do then?
What does that have to do this?
Well if you'd rather nobody plays anything on Linux then you obviously have something else in mind so it has everything to do with this. You're the one insisting that it should only be used for some other purpose.
I think you're lost. My point was that of course we don't *need* Roblox on Linux, we don't *need* any games. So why draw the line at Roblox?
Well the way you said "we don't need to play anything on Linux" implies that you're against the idea, my response was asking what you'd be doing instead. I'm not lost, I was wondering what headspace you're in that you're against that entirely. However it looks like you meant it in a purely literal sense. Most games aren't exploiting children though, so that's why I'd draw a line there.
This is really good news, glad to have access to the Roblox library on Linux again. I’m curious to see how the graphics compare to the desktop version.
That said, Roblox is a scummy company that exploits users and developers, many of whom are children. Also, the chat filter and content moderation are poor, and they completely ignore the major predator issue the platform has. I don’t support the company itself.
it uses the x86 version of the android apk so it's the same as the pc version but works better than it ever did
If you're an adult and want to use this to play a game, your choice. I hope this doesn't help Roblox reach more children though.
