The update for #Mastodon patching the bug in the preview is near, so it's time for a last look at #traffic sources for @heiseonline:
#Twitter keeps decreasing and is already overtaken by Mastodon (thx also to problems with our bot for #X, when it works, X brings more people).
#Flipboard and #Facebook are growing again, #Bluesky and #Threads are far behind. But Threads brings already more traffic than Bluesky, although we can't autopost (every link) there.

It's remarkable how stable Mastodon is over time - only matched by Bluesky and Threads, which are stable for a completely different reason.

One thing I have wondered about is whether, when sharing a link on Mastodon, all the traffic generated by different instances crawling metadata from the source inflates traffic artificially. That's something I was considering looking at my own data in cpanel, as I received more traffic to my website than I expected, but I'm not sure if it's a potential explanation?

To be honest, I have thought this multiple times already. But I have looked into it, and they come from different screensizes, are mainly on diverse phones and the OS also differs. And different posts get wildly different traffic numbers.

But it's still a little bit strange, yes.

I also experienced more genuine engagement on Mastodon for the content I posted, despite more of my peers being on Twitter. So it didn't seem so surprising in that sense.

I guess the consistency of Mastodon could also be explained in part by the chronological timeline. Timing might also matter less as people might happily boost content that is not completely fresh.
