I genuinely think this is one of the reasons the coalition had such a hard-on for it

I’m disappointed that Albo didn’t drop this bullshit policy

There’s nothing to be gained by appeasing conservative Australians by going with a coalition policy, they’ll hate him for another made-up reason

That’s stupid. Don’t do their work for them… Social media isn’t the ONLY fucking way to build and keep online communities, FFS.

It’s certainly the most accessible though

It’s no more accessible than chat rooms, forums, and normal fucking websites…

I’d argue that social media really shouldn’t be used by anyone. Not in its current form anyway. Forums are fine, anonymized shit that can be curated like Lemmy is okay.

I also don’t think “won’t somebody please think of the gay people” as any more compelling than “won’t somebody please think of the children?”

Social media is toxic and the kind of genitalia you like doesn’t really factor into that at all.

I agree. We had the experiment, and it failed in every aspect. It’s not made people more social, society better, the truth to prevail, or improved any aspect of media. A responsible government would have regulated them like broadcast media, but at this point there should be moratorium on social media and AI generated media for 5-10 years where it’s just banned, at least in the US, but I don’t think it would really hurt if implemented anywhere

How about a corporate social media ban for everyone, and then everyone can use the Fediverse?

But yeah, seriously, online censorship ‘for the children’ only harms children by reinforcing offline bubbles, and preventing one of the few escape routes from being an option. It’s really bad.
