Closeup on a cluster of tiny Aralia racemosa berries growing on a short shrub. Most of them are still green, and there are even a few flowers left, but some are a dark dark purple. These ripe few look very juicy.

So, I planted some American Spikenard years ago despite very little (and conflicting) information online about it's edibility. You can read that it is edible, it's not, it is but tastes horrible, and/or it's tasty. Well finally, I am here to confirm that it is in fact DELICIOUS and tastes like root beer!!! 😍 Unsurprising for this genus I guess, but there you have it.

I suspect the edibility confusion comes from misidentification or different cultivars.

That definitely tracks, maybe it's one of those species like milkweed where flavor is extremely variable from plant to plant. If so, I got really lucky with this one lol
