@henry nice video! Just a note: Fastmail may be an Australian company, but they're hosted in the US. I've used them for many years, but I wouldn't touch them for privacy sensitive stuff.

I believe what you said regarding "zero-knowledge/zero-access" encryption is inaccurate. Tuta and Proton both claim to store your E-Mail encrypted, but aslong as the E-Mails wasn't send with PGP (or similar) or from the same provider they're not End-to-End-encrypted and both Proton and Tuta can theoretically access all your E-Mails before they are being encrypted. I do not know how the "client side encryption" is supposed to work if the incoming E-Mails first come through their serverd and even outcoming must be unecrypted at some point if the receiver doed not support encryption.

Mailbox?

I recently did the transition away from Gmail and it was a toss up between Posteo and Mailbox.org. I wanted to use my own mail clients so that eliminated Tuta, which was also more expensive. I heard that Proton email addresses aren't accepted as valid by many sites as well.

I went with Mailbox over Posteo just because I preferred the domain name and could get a decent address from it with my name. So far, it seems very solid. Although the interface of their web portal is very... German. The advanced features are frustratingly not user friendly to set up and they don't explain well what some of the settings really do but once you figured it out, it works. Since I use third party clients at least I don't have to interact with that interface often now that it is set up.

Using fastmail for about 3 years now and very happy.

Same. About the very happy part. Have only been using it since earlier this year. Had been using Proton, and while zero knowledge is nice, I don't really need that level of secrecy. And the convenience of Fastmail playing nice with others is something I'm really appreciating lately.

Tuta free has been treating me nicely. I like the folks behind it and when I opened an issue with the bug I was experiencing with the app they fixed it like immediately, and that was pretty cool.

I believe it was a known issue, so the solution may have been planned or in the works already, but it was a nice interaction with the devs, and I like the ethos with which they run things :)

Yeah, Tuta mail and calendar have been great for all my super basic needs. Once they get a drive going, I’m basically jumping off proton to tuta completely at that point.

Same here.

I’ve been using Germany based mailbox and I’ve been pretty happy with it.

+1 for mailbox (mailbox.org). I've have a business and personal account with them since I degoogled during the pandemic. Nothing but good things to say about them. 👍

Proton needs to fire Andy before I remotely start to trust them again.

the first one had some controversy with the creator

my preference is the second

what exactly is the third?

It was blown out of proportion and misinterpreted in places yeah, but it's reddit... it wasn't a good look at all though and he shouldn't have said it.
The real problem I have with Proton is all this time investment in useless features, like AI. Instead of focusing on a few products.

Tuta I am in the process of trying, it's got a slow and dated interface vs Proton, but still functional. It's slightly cheaper vs Proton too. I'm still debating if I go Proton or Tuta + Mullvad.

i remember when it happened

didn’t he double down with justifications instead of flat out separating himself from the claim?

this pretty much matches my memory

https://www.reddit.com/r/Anarchism/comments/1id5v21/does_proton_really_support_trump_a_deeper/mbfaw4e/

it was more Libertarian delusion than directly Trump supporting but it was pretty concerning regardless

i wonder how many readers came in after shit got white washed

He doubled down and then proton left mastodon and exclusively posts on Reddit and Twitter now.

Fuck that pathetic behaviour

Not to mention the shutdown of the mastodon account, lack of Linux drive and the allegations of vibe-coding.

vibe coding non-ironically is just so confusing

anyone that has done any debugging knows there is no way this works

That article is such bullshit.
That anonymously submitted medium article that gets floated around ignores Internet Association, so wouldn’t be shocking if it was from proton attempting to do PR damage fixating on identity politics with intentional omission of Internet Association involvement.

Yen conveniently ignored that after working at the FTC, Slater become the vice-president for legal and regulatory policy for the Internet Association lobby group. Which was founded by “small business” like Google, Amazon, eBay and Facebook.

And involved in trying to infringe upon privacy rights. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/09/lawmakers-must-not-let-internet-association-weaken-california-consumer-privacy-act

So yeah, proton founder cherry picked information that tried to make it seem like it was acceptable to praise the pick when reality is the past is too murky to endorse in any manner.

Now seeing straight up bribing and gifts from corporations not even hiding it the whole thing aged like milk.

Does this video has sound, because i don't hear something

Yes, it have sound.

No clue why all of my browser doesn't play it, but i downloaded the video, because i was interrested and yes there is sound.

Some videos are silent for me when I’m on silent mode on my iPhone.
It’s happening few and far between nowadays. Threads was showing this behaviour a few days ago.

I guess it depends on device and application.

I had something like that as well, that's why i tested another video which runs fine.

Peertube HLS sometimes is broken

What's HLS?

HLS is http live streaming it splits video into chunks and sends it to your IIRC peertube sometimes doesn't send the audio chunks they are implementing a fix check https://github.com/xbmc/inputstream.adaptive/issues/343

The 1080p version doesn't have audio try 720p

Could be hard. It seams i only hear audio on audio only

For people who don't need the paid features, it is probably sufficient to choose an email provider like Disroot or Autistici or cock.li and use PGP encryption by means of GNU Privacy Guard or Thunderbird or Mailvelope.

Betterbird is a fork of Thunderbird that’s German 🇩🇪
