The UK just proposed three extreme surveillance measures: mandatory 24/7 scanning software on every phone and tablet, age verification for all VPN users with website tracking, and labeling encryption developers as “hostile actors.” This comes after 500,000 people petitioned against age verification, and lawmakers responded by making things worse. Here’s what’s actually in the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, why it matters globally, and what you can do.

We need counter movements and fast. Lobbying is happening way too quick (Please think of the children).
What can we practically do now as an average joe?
I don’t know. It is impossible to tell how effective anything could be against Billion and Trillion-aire companies that are intent on lobbying for our data.
I think join or create any counter-movement.
If you create one - maybe merge it with a larger counter-movement or vice versa.
Privacy might be a decent place to start - https://lemmyverse.net/communities?query=privacy
And unfortunately the platforms that create this and are lobbying might be most effective.

And these types of movements.
Open Rights Group generally have campaigns and actions you can take. Most the average person can do is raise awareness and write hopeful letters to MPs. https://www.openrightsgroup.org/
I find it impressive that the same hierarchical structure responsible for failures like Hillsborough, Windrush, and the Post Office scandal (amongst many others) has the hubris to tell us to trust it with this kind of invasive monitoring - it is really quite astonishing.
To the incompetent elites: make sure that your institutions are trustworthy enough before asking for the kind of data that would dramatically magnify the abuses of power, coverups and institutional failures that would be possible.
Most Brits will shrug their shoulders. They are docile and ill informed and dont want to engage on the continued erosion of their rights.
Ironic that their national propaganda is all about freedom from an overarching, Big Brother, state.
Tell me about it. The apathy among my friends is infuriating. And if you push it too hard you get labeled a conspiracy theorist nutter, even if you back up everything you say with facts, evidence, and credible sources.
Bread and circuses is really all it takes to control people. With a tiny bit of special economic privileges for those that start to think a bit too independently, to get them back in line and feeling superior to their peers.

Damm. What I just don't unterstand is, where everyone got this idea from all of a sudden. Was thre like a major event, where every lawmaker thought: OK, we gotta start cracking down HARD on privacy? Is it maybe about Israel, because they wanna stop the increasing criticism? Did everyone just read Orwell and thought, oh this sounds really cool?
@strawberryman@tilvids.com Lol. For real though, I think China is the one which normalised it and boasted about zero crime and terrorism and everyone else thought "Surveillance = Good"
@basil_disco@spectra.video
Yeah, that could be true. Another theory of mine is, that it has something to do with Israel. Like they've seen what the videos of the genocide on social media have done to their reputation and they wanna crack down hard on that to stop it.
@strawberryman@tilvids.com That's also true. Most major countries ended up with pro-surveillance and censorship governments currently so it's been hard for privacy.
EU, Russia, India and now the UK... It's spreading.
