Many are calling this a win, but Google’s new developer verification program still threatens to lock down the Android ecosystem like iOS. Here’s why sideloading remains practically hostile, why it’s still unclear how this impacts 3rd-party app stores like F-Droid, and what this means for custom ROMs, alternative app stores, and your digital freedom. The fight for real Android openness isn’t over, here’s what you need to do about it.

It’s almost like Google proposed the most dystopian change they could think of to make their new proposal, which probably was their original plan anyway, seem more appealing.

Google: 'This is about safety and security....'
- Yeah, safety and security for *them.*

Also, this reeks of Google shelving WEI due to the massive backlash they received for even entertaining the idea of locking down the web at large like they're locking down Android.

@henry you are absolutely correct. being on custom rom there are already apps i can't use at all mostly banking. and recently they introduced an api that checks if app is downloaded from google play (in guise of accurate download numbers). So for those apps I can't even use aurora store as well ( these are not even banking apps). Them tbere are apps that complain about developer settings being enabled.

this will just be one more nail in the coffin of openness in android.

What is that strategy called? reverse switch-and-bait?

Naw, just classic moving the goal posts. (I hate that as I type this and listen to video in background that he said basically my same line).

They’re making it harder by putting up more barriers such as extra warning screens to discourage users from breaking free from the Google walled garden.
