Released in arcades in 1997, Geki-Oh ShienRyu came to home consoles in 1999.

Castle of Shikigami Trilogy includes 3 incredibly enjoyable shoot ‘em ups that are bursting with superb unique-playing characters and epic boss fights. The fact that the physical box set is as high quality as it is only adds value to an otherwise can’t-miss collection.

Steam has added “bullet heaven” as an official tag, in an effort to separate games like Vampire Survivors from danmaku, “bullet hell” shooters. The author would prefer “survivors-like.” But it’s pretty clear that “surviors-like” has been rejected, broadly speaking. Either way, I hope this helps people find the kinds of games they’re looking for.

Back in the early 1990s we didn’t have YouTube or Discord or Twitch to help us make informed game purchases, we just had to read reviews in magazines or buy games based on kick ass cover art, which is exactly what I did with this. I never played the first 3 and I think there were more after this one. Sega’s answer to Nintendos R-Type series. Again it was faster, crazier and turned everything up to 11 in the side scrolling shooter genre. I think there was also a 2 player option. The music was ace and the bosses were absolute bastards. I also spent a long time trying to draw the ship. I think this was called something else in the USA, Lightning Force maybe?

I was watching an unrelated video that just happened to mention that Keio Flying Squadron was (at time of filming) the most expensive Sega CD/Mega CD game there is. I must say that the title of “most expensive” belonging to a shmup makes me a little proud – in a perverse sort of way!

Here’s an old school shmup! I haven’t played any of the Arcade Garage titles, but I trust M2 to do them justice.
