Hey shmuppers! Let's use this thread to nominate our choices for August's Game of the Month!

Update: Congrats to the winners (and any lurkers who might have participated w/o posting)! The medals have been added to the sidebar.

Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4/5, and Xbox Series XIS owners will need to be a little more patient. Surprising to me that even the downloadable versions of the console releases are being held back.

Something worth highlighting is that this isn't the first time Zanac has been reissued for the Nintendo Switch.

Well, it's my 2nd 1cc ever -- wish it was for a better game! But it only took a couple of hours to grind out, so I felt like what the hell.

Speaking to Time Extension, Barnes told us that he often gets asked online when he is going to revisit the Strike series, and stated that he does eventually have plans to come back to it in the form of a spiritual successor, which he will develop under his company Retro Ninja. However, before he does that, he has plans for a few different games first, wanting to try something new and challenging before making the decision to revisit his earlier work:

As of this moment, very little information has been revealed about the brand new title, with all we know about it so far being that the game will be called CopperStorm and that is is described as "a new Steampunk shoot 'em up" inspired by games like Thunderforce IV & Metal Slug.

I just wanted to point out two things.

A small update to a story from last year, when this title was originally announced. Looks like the developer is still on-track to finish the game before the end of 2025 (though no firm release date has been announced). There's also a video posted in the article which features actual gameplay.

The X68000 Z is a rather pricey mini re-creation of the original Japanese Sharp X68000 computer system (which was the birthplace of many a fantastic shmup).

In the face of all the competition on the PS1, Airgrave doesn’t stand as one of the platform’s best shoot-em-ups and part of its appeal will be lost on anyone who can’t understand all the dialogue, but it’s a solid effort all the same and certainly worth at least one playthrough.

As a big fan of Compile and Aleste in particular, I was happy to see this!

Exa Arcadia hardware is really intended for arcade operators, but some of these games may show up in your local gamecenter, if you're lucky enough to have one.

TL:DR: Perfectly serviceable, but overpriced at $59.

City Connection and Clear River Games have announced R-Type Delta: HD Boosted, a remastered version of the 1998 PlayStation title. It will launch in 2025.

I kind of missed out on the whole *zeal franchise. While this has already been out for a while on Steam, this is the remix version's first appearance on Switch.

While this game has a mixed reputation as a "gooner-shooter" it sounds like there's some mechanical problems hindering the gameplay:

Tube shooters? An interesting sub-genre, but one I don't have ton of familiarity with. I have played Gyruss a few times on NES, and maybe a little bit of Tempest... good games, but not my wheelhouse.

Shmups were born in arcades, and remain their natural habitat. Happy to see new venues are still springing up!

This month's voting led to another tie, so I picked the final winner which is... Gunvein by the folks at NGDEV! It's available on PC and the Nintendo Switch.

Are any of y'all running this on Linux or the Steam Deck? It's 10% off but $53 is a lot to spend to find out whether or not it works. I suppose I'll wait on reviews.

The game was GG Aleste (the M2 release on Switch). I know it's hardly DDP DOJ lol, but it's actually the first shmup I've ever 1cc'ed, and I feel pretty good about it!

Weird one here. It's described as a "multi-scrolling shooter" but it's hard to get a handle on what that means from the gameplay footage. Sometimes it looks like the player is moving the screen around (free-scrolling) but other times it seems like the screen is auto scrolling.
