Feed with adjustable amount of posts

submitted by edited

Most of us probably (?) came to the fediverse to escape the claws of big tech. Endless scrolling feeds are their way to trap you in their platforms to waste more time there (more data, more ad revenue). Those incentives are not applicable here. Currently the feed has 75 posts per page, which while not infinite achieves close to the safe effect. Personally that leads to excessive time spent.

It would be great if we could have the option to limit the amount of posts in the feed, then you would need to click to the next page to see more.

To be clear, talking about the feed and not comments to the posts.

Piefed (at least web page & PWA) does not have infinite scroll. Maybe you’re using a third-party app that does?

You are correct. I’m on piefed.social. I counted it to 75 posts, while not infinite is still a lot/similar effect. I will edit the main post.

Currently, the number of posts per page can be set by the instance admin but it would be trivial to make it a per-user setting.

Cool, think about it. It’s a small detail, but I think it can improve the UX.

It will also dramatically decrease the page load time and reduce CPU usage on the server. Currently the default value is as high as I can make it without being embarrassingly slow so anything less than that will be noticeably snappier.

I’ve done it - go to https://piefed.social/user/settings and look for the field “Posts per page”.
