Imperialism is often pursued for domestic aims, like “Distract the population at home from my pedophilia.” The important bit of it is a senseless imposition of one country’s will on another without any just cause, and in expectation of gain of leverage or power over the target country.

IMO, calling the Iran war “imperialist” assumes a much more ambitious/coherent goal than Trump had when he started it.
