Alberta separatists said Monday they have formally submitted almost 302,000 signatures to try to trigger a referendum on the province leaving Canada.

The group needed 178,000 signatures to force the province to consider such a vote.

The question of separation could go on a provincewide ballot as early as October, as Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has said she would move forward if enough names are gathered and verified. Smith has said she personally does not support the oil-rich province leaving Canada.

A “yes” vote would not trigger independence automatically. Negotiations with the federal government would have to take place and Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal, said some Indigenous groups who are already using the courts to prevent an independence referendum would use venues including the courts to stop independence from happening.

what exactly is their rationale here? “lets be a tiny country, that will make us real independent and free and totally not a plaything next to the big ol’ US of A”

(inb4 “Alberta not tiny": by population, yes. 4M people is tiny)

They wouldn’t even be a plaything, the US would walk in the next day and take it. Why wouldn’t they? No military, no international relations, and a bunch of oil.

About the population of Oklahoma so yeah small. They wouldn’t stay independent for long. US would take control. And instead of universal healthcare they can have for profit care.

do it, and then lets see the egg on your collective faces when you don’t get anywhere near the votes you thought you’d get.

even if this somehow did get the votes it’d never happen. They’d pull a 90’s Quebec and say ‘we want to keep the money though…’ and then Ottawa would just laugh in their faces and say “no”. add this to the fact that ALL the various indigenous groups in Alberta are also just going to say no. It’s a song and dance to showcase their idiocy and I’m all for it. do it. lets see how far you get.

It’s to provide justification for US involvement.

Alberta is difficult to underestimate.

The “stay in Canada” petition had >400,000 signatures.

So, who’s getting the signatures for the referendum on having these people arrested for treason?

Yeah! Independance! What a great idea. Fragmenting Canada so it will be easier for the US to take it over. Fragmenting NATO, the EU and Canada is exactly what they want. It’s so fucking dumb. I wonder who supported this initiative. If California and New York would become independent, I would only support them. But Canada should stay one big front right now. Normally I wouldn’t care much, I hate borders and I hate governments dictating a large country while every part of that country is different. But there’s one big evil fascist predator who loves to spread the heard to take the weakest prey, so we should all stay strong and together.

I hate separatists even more than I hate the French.

Don’t hate on the French, they’re the only ones in Europe who never fully trusted the US.

In Canada we love the French because we know they aren’t American.

Why? Aren’t they attempting to make use of their right to self-determination?

The Alberta secession movement is about as authentic and is backed by many of the same parties as the Ukrainian separatists in the Donbas were pre-2014.

I don’t really have the time to spare right now so I’ll take your word on that claim. Either way I wasn’t really talking about this specific group, I was referencing separatist movements in general as the OC seems to “hate” all of them.

Most of the times it’s just populist trying to scam naive people into weakening the system and taking over power. They usually act on behalf of foreign actors, are corrupt and in the end are the only ones that benefit from the fallout. Everyone else suffers.

Certainly sounds apropos for this situation

I can understand this reasoning, but I still believe some separatist movements are genuine and should be respected, without trying to trigger the hornet’s nest the Catalonia separatists come to mind.

Catalans are the perfect example of what I’m describing. 90% of Catalans approved current constitution and were perfectly happy being part of Spain. During many decades support for independence was around 20%. Then couple of assholes took over power locally, started promising economic miracles and laying about how Spain is stealing from them. The support jumped to 50% and all the problems started. Now you have split society, instability and corruption. The only people that benefited are the politicians that go elected by separatist idiots and got rich by stealing public money. People that don’t support this stupid movement are discriminated and can’t live peacefully in their homes.

Alberta separatist group Russian influence campaign

Try american interference

Because it’s not both, not even remotely to the same degree. Russian interests don’t own all the major papers in Alberta, American ones do. The separatists haven’t been meeting people in Moscow, they’ve been meeting them in fucking Mar-a-lago. Putin didn’t offer to float these people half a billion dollars, the Trump administration did. Don’t get me wrong, fuck Russia. But I am sick to death of Americans trying to deflect from this. Wake up and smell the roses, your country is an evil rogue actor.

It’s not Russia and American interests. It’s Trump and Putin interests. Countries and nations no longer really matter to the billionaire class. Just because we’re stuck viewing things through the lens of left-wing/right-wing governments and geopolitics doesn’t mean it’s actually relevant to what they’re doing and what they have planned for us. They’re going to replace us with AI and robots while they kill us all off, so they can have a sparsely populated tech-utopia ecological paradise all to themselves. The attacks on democracy and the dismantling of the US government is not an accident, the chaos and conflict is all part of the plan.

I am not American, it is curious that you assume that right of the bat. I have come to believe that Russia is generally involved (among with US) in any movement that stokes right wing extremism and separitism because they support those movements with a side bribe of “support Russia’s invasion in Nato/EU summit etc”. Putin and Trump deserve to rot in the same cesspit, they are the one and the same thing in my perspective when it comes to evaluating how much shit they try unleash on the world (whether or not one is more potent at doing is not a question I am trying to get here).

And it wouldn’t be the first time that Russia has attempted this:

Hey look, it’s one of those American owned major Alberta papers.

Putin and Trump deserve to rot in the same cesspit, they are the one and the same thing in my perspective when it comes to evaluating how much shit they try unleash on the world (whether or not one is more potent at doing is not a question I am trying to get here).

The US is absolutely the primary foreign actor in this situation and all you are doing here is muddying the water. If you don’t know enough to know that, maybe your commentary on the subject ain’t worth much.

Hey look, it’s one of those American owned major Alberta papers.

Sure however it is not very sound logic that an American owned media outlet trying to stoke separatist movement warns Canada against foreign influence on separatist movements. I do genuinely believe that American owned Canadian news outlets are there to spread propaganda. But a more nuanced understanding of this is that the form of propaganda changes according to context. Around the time this news was released (2019), US’s main motivation probably wasn’t to stoke separatism in Canada but probably to fight it since US interests and Canadian interests aligned at the time. So they benefited more in fighting against Russian supported separatism. Now under Trump they have changed their foreign policies regarding this and have the same angle as Russia. I am not intent on proving that US is not a major player in stoking world-wide right wing extremism, my point is that they are currently partners with Russia on this.

I can give you tens of more references regarding.

and you can repeat “meh don’t like this reference, it is west propaganda” until infinity.

However, 1- Your fervour in discrediting any Russian influence on Canadian politics, to the level of being aggressive and insulting, 2- Just discrediting references that don’t align with your world view without providing any as counter proof or trying to understand nuances, 3-following the usual rhetoric of “it is US backed propaganda against Russia” and 4-Getting offended by me calling Putin the same turd that is Trump makes me think you are an ml alt account. If not consider joining.

However, the petition could face another hurdle this week as an Edmonton, Alberta, judge is expected to rule on a court challenge launched by a group of Alberta First Nations who say Alberta separation would violate treaty rights.

Imagine if Alberta decides to secede from Canada, the First Nations get their own separate … nations, and then Alberta realizes they made a Brexit and want back in. First Nations sovereignty through the back door!

These self centred traitors to Canada are welcome to leave anytime they want. If they think life as an American territory (they’ll never be a state) is going to be better than what they have now, i have a war to sell them.
