The level of thought and planning and physical effort to make this is taken for granted today but damn it’s impressive to me.

I highly recommend stopping by for the tour here if you’re in the area. It’s one of the best-known Scottish castles and also on the way to the even more popular Isle of Skye, so it gets a touch busy, but it does actually deserve it. It has lots of interesting little details, it has been involved in a bunch of history, and the hosts were really good when I went there. The area is gorgeous too

Is it me knowing nothing about bridges or it does seem like the water level was much higher when it was erected?

It’s likely that the photo was just taken at low tide. This castle is built on an island at the relatively narrow chokepoint between three sea lochs and gets tides of several metres between low and high. If you look at the actual island you can see what’s probably the high tide line where the grass stops growing too

Many bridges are built higher than the ’normal’ water level to account for variation after heavy rains or snowmelts and the like.
