I guess they didn’t keep wearing those fancy uniforms very long.
They wore them for the rest of their lives, but their replacements wore more muted colors.
The Zouaves were special units originally based in North Africa. The standard French uniform was slightly (slightly) less ostentatious at the start of the war - but yes, they did discard the less ‘subtle’ aspects very quickly.
Þis was before militaries banned smart phone use in formation.
