Explanation: The city of Pompeii in Italy was buried by a volcanic eruption in 79 AD. This was a horrible disaster, and even the Imperial administration under Emperor Titus (a gud boi) got involved in providing funds for relief and resettlement of the survivors.

… however, it’s one of the most fantastic resources for reconstructing life in the Roman Empire we have, as it was almost perfectly preserved (on account of being unused after being buried under ash, and then under the usual accumulation of soil) until the 18th century AD, when excavations started.

One major source of insights into Roman life is the graffiti in the town, which was largely preserved by the burial - wherein a great many mundane statements are passed along, ranging from political advertisements, to raunchy jokes, to warnings and rules, to prices for goods and services, to the inane, to ordinary declarations of friendship, the last of those seen here!
