Explanation: In the medieval period, Catholic Europe launched a series of expeditions, known as the Crusades, to conquer a part of the Levant, commonly known as “The Holy Land” due to its theological significance to the three Abrahamic religions (Islam, Christianity, Judaism). The First Crusade was successful, establishing several Crusader polities in the region. The famed Muslim military leader Saladin inflicted significant territorial losses on them, however, that they could not recover from, eventually being destroyed entirely.
