Explanation: Saladin, the ruler of the Syrian-Egyptian Ayyubid Sultanate in the Medieval period, was a leader noted for his brilliance, his charisma, and his virtue - relative to the time period, there are certainly no lack of ‘accepted’ behaviors, especially in war, which rankle modern sensibilities, but that’s true of every figure before the modern day. He’s most remembered in the West as the ‘chivalrous’ Muslim opponent of the Christian crusader king Richard the Lionheart of England.
At the time of Saladin’s death, despite being one of the most powerful men in the world, of one of the most wealthy polities of the world, he had no personal wealth beyond a single gold coin and forty silver coins - perhaps a few months pay for a commoner. Hardly the fund for a funeral of a man of such stature!
Saladin, throughout his life, was notably charitable, and despite making vast fortunes several times over through war and skillful administration, he never retained them, preferring to reward men of merit and alleviate the suffering of the poor.
While one can argue that as a powerful leader, he didn’t need vast personal wealth to enjoy the good life, the fact remains that that has never stopped other powerful leaders from hording all the wealth they can! Saladin’s example here is exceptional, and laudable!
Fucking gigachad
