Historical Artifacts

The Ambrosian Iliad is a late 5th or early 6th century illustrated manuscript of Homer's Iliad, the only illustrated text from Antiquity (and in fact, illustrations at all) of that poem. This particular image is one of 52, and shows the Greek camp near Troy.

This is a bronze sword found in southern Hubei province, China, in 1965. It is inscribed with bird-worm seal script characters reading "King Goujian of Yue made this sword for [his] personal use".

Display tag: "Mexican silver dollars from the Confederate treasury. When the Confederate government evacuated Richmond, Virginia, on April 2, 1865, the Confederate treasury was also removed. Eventually, the gold and silver were transferred to wagons which remained with President Jefferson Davis. Prior to his capture in Irwin County, Georgia, on May 9, Davis paid the members of his escort from the treasury. Captain George Rives, Co. A, 56th Alabama Infantry (mounted), received $25.00 in gold and silver. Eleven Mexican silver dollars were saved by Rives as souvenirs. James Madison Bullock, adjutant, 2nd Alabama Cavalry, received $30.00 as his final payment. Bullock used $28.00 in order to make his way home to Alabama, saving two silver dollars as souvenirs.

Saw this at the Art Institute of Chicago recently

This powder horn was property of John Calfe a Captain in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Calfe was from New Hampshire but this horn was from his time serving in what today is Vermont. He was stationed at Mt Independence across the lake from Fort Ticonderoga until July of 1777.
