Terra sigillata and imitations, particularly African Red Slip, were a kind of mass-produced mid-grade ‘consumer good’ that was shipped all over the Roman Empire. Workshops in Africa would mass-produce pieces like this to be exported as far off Britannia, Germania, Syria, and Italy, of course. While not quite a ‘luxury’ good, they (or a close equivalent/substitute good) would’ve been the normal tableware for a middle class family, or the equivalent of the ‘good tableware’ for a poorer (but not wretchedly impoverished) family.
