YSK about the French Republican Calendar (en.wikipedia.org)

Community iconc/youshouldknow@lemmy.world by

An alternate calendar system briefly used by republican France. It had 360 days per year with 5 or 6 “intercalary” or leap days between years. It had 12 months of 30 days, which were comprised by 3 weeks of 10 days. Every day of the year had a unique name: a common plant, animal, mineral, or tool/equipment (ie January 31 was “Broccoli” and May 4 was “Silkworm").

Community iconc/politics@lemmy.world by

You can certainly argue that shutting down the government to force a vote on Obamacare subsidies was the right thing to do. But it is very hard to find any strategic sense in putting Americans through a world of pain for 43 days only to shrug your shoulders and give up. Particularly as Schumer himself said the subsidies were a “life or death” issue and there was “no fucking way” the Democrats would cave on it.

GOP Lawmakers Are Using a Wild Conspiracy Theory to Attack Medication Abortion (truthout.org)

Community iconc/politics@lemmy.world by
Tony Bark@pawb.social

Anti-abortion activists have been trying to convince the broader public that medication abortion is dangerous for years, but their latest argument is a decades-old asinine conspiracy theory. In a June 18 letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin, 25 House Republicans asked the agency to study the alleged “byproducts” of Mifepristone (the first medication administered in a medication abortion regimen) in water systems. In the letter, the Republican legislators make an unfounded assertion that “residual amounts of the drug and its metabolites” in wastewater “could potentially interfere with a person’s fertility, regardless of sex.” The anti-abortion lawmakers wanted clarification on whether the agency has methods for detecting the medication and its “byproducts” in water supplies and, if not, what resources are needed to develop such methods.

All Kagi Search users can now flag low-quality AI content (“AI slop”) in web, image, and video search results. We will verify these reports using our own signals. If a domain primarily publishes AI-generated content, we will downrank it in Kagi Search and mark it as AI slop. If a page is AI-generated but the domain is mixed (not mostly AI), we will flag the page as AI-generated but will not downrank it.

This gets us to the central problem of today’s surveillance state. No one running the cameras wants to be observed. One reason that city officials object to releasing Flock data, for example, must that they themselves are among the recorded. The cameras are on them too; they too can be tracked. Everything means everything for these everywhere cameras.

In August 2025, two nearly identical lawsuits were filed: one against United (in San Francisco federal court) and one against Delta Air Lines (in Brooklyn federal court). They claim that each airline sold more than one million “window seats” on aircraft such as the Boeing 737, Boeing 757, and Airbus A321, many of which are next to blank fuselage walls rather than windows.
